The Pittsburgh Penguins will travel down to Florida to face the Panthers for the 3rd time this season. Pittsburgh has won both of the earlier season match ups.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh will come into Saturday playing good hockey they have won their last 4 games including a very good performance in Tampa Bay on Thursday grabbing a 5-4 win in overtime with the game winning goal from Jason Zucker. Pittsburgh is currently 5 points clear of Buffalo so this mini win streak has been big for Penguins
Offense
The Penguins are a fairly mediocre team statistically on both offence and defence. Let’s take a deeper look at the offence, they only score 3.26 goals per game which is only good for 13th in the league, they do however manage the 5th most shots on goal at 33.7 per game. The power play is pretty much middle of the road at 21% good enough for 15th in the NHL. They are really good at the face off dot which helps them generate offence quicker and more effectively
Defense
As mentioned above a pretty mediocre defensive team as well, ranking 18th in goals given up per game, also letting teams put up big shots on goal numbers as Pittsburgh gives up almost 34 shots per game. The Penguins have a middle of the pack penalty kill coming in right at 15th in the league and has been on the improve recently.
Goaltending
There were a few rumblings that Tristan Jarry could be traded, but that never happened and he should get the call in net for Pittsburgh, Jarry has had a pretty decent season going 19-7-5 with 2.77 goals against average and a .916%, he also has one shutout this year. If it is indeed Jarry between the pipes he will be looking for his 4th straight win.
Florida Panthers
Florida will be coming into Saturday after losing 2-1 at home to the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. Florida went down 2-0 in the first period and could never recover even after outshooting Nashville 24-11 over the final two periods.
Offense
The Panthers are a very exciting offensive team, they score a lot of goals, 8th most at 3.38 per game they lead the league in shots per game at 36.6. Both of those stats are a little surprising since they get not a lot of help from the power play, converting at only 21.4 percent its only good enough for 14th in the NHL
Defense
Defensively is where the Panthers struggle, they give up the 23rd most goals in the NHL and also give up the 22nd most shots against per game at 33. The penalty kill is dreadful at only 74% which ranks them 27th in the league. That stat has certainly killed them on a few occasions and they take the leagues most penalties at almost 6 per game!
Goaltending
Sergei Bobrovsky is listed as the expected starter for the Panthers, he’s gone 18-17-2 this year with a 3.04 goals against average and a .904 save percentage. He lost his most recent start against Nashville, and actually hasn’t won back to back starts since February 6th and 9th. A bit of an up and down season thus far.
