A storied Eastern Conference battle will take place on Saturday morning between the visiting Philadelphia Flyers travelling to Boston to face the Bruins at the TD Garden.
While there are no Phil Esposito’s or Bobby Clarke’s in the lineups, there are certainly a fair share of tough customers who play a gritty game.
The two teams have very similar records, both entering the contest with 22 wins on the year at roughly the halfway mark of the season.
Philadelphia Flyers
While the Flyers currently rank 8th overall in the NHL in goals per game, at 2.8, their defensive prowess is almost non-existent. Philly currently sits in the 27th spot in goals against, allowing an even 3.0 on average per match.
It’s no surprise to see star forwards, Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux, at the top of the Flyers’ scoring chart. The duo consistently leads the team on the scoresheet year-in and year-out, and 2016-17 is no different, with Voracek collecting 40 points in 44 games, and Giroux 36 of his own.

Following the two closely is Wayne Simmonds, who had netted the most goals of any Flyer with his 17 and has added 16 assists for 33 total points. The gritty power winger is one to watch in this game, as he has a propensity to get to the dirty areas and play physical, a style that is accustomed to the Boston Bruins teams.
Rookie, Ivan Provorov, and sophomore, Shayne Gostisbehere, lead the Flyers back-end in points, with 19 apiece. They’re followed closely by veteran leader, Mark Streit, who has tallied 16 points but in just 31 games played. Radko Gudas is another gritty Flyer that should be in the middle of the action in Boston.
The Flyers’ goaltending situation may need to be resolved if the team wishes to make a postseason run, as both Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth have save percentages of .901 or lower. Mason owns a 2.87 GAA and a .901 SV%, where Neuvirth has a 3.18 and .876, respectively.
Rookie Anthony Stolarz has performed well in his limited action, but a trade for a veteran, such as Ryan Miller, may be prudent.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins are much the opposite of the Flyers from a team overview standpoint, at least in terms of total team scoring and defense. The Bruins currently sit 23rd in goals per game, but 6th overall in goals against per game.
Pest turned sniper, Brad Marchand, is once against leading the Bruins in the point-race with 38 on the season. Marchand is following up his breakout campaign with another strong season and has slowly become the focal point of the Bruins’ attack.
Now in his third year, David Pastrnak, is leading the club in goals with 19 and looks like he’s a budding superstar in the making, consistently putting together highlight reel plays.

Pastrnak appears to be a steal at #24 in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, sitting third overall in points of the class, just two back of second-place, Aaron Ekblad, but in 67 fewer games.
Diminutive defender, Torey Krug, leads the Bruins back-end with 26 points in 43 games played. He tops the next best Bruins blueliner, captain Zdeno Chara, by 16 point. The Bruins will need some more help from the backend to boost their rankings in goals per game.
Incumbent netminder, Tuukka Rask, is stating his case for a Vezina award consideration with an elite first half of the year. Rask has a 1.95 GAA and a .926 SV% in his 34 appearances, with a 21-9-3 record and 5 shutouts.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Flyers rank 8th in goals per game at 2.8 on average
- Philadelphia is 3-7 in their past 10 games
- Philadelphia is 8-10-3 on the road this year
- Boston is 4-6 in their last 10 games
- Boston is the only team currently in a playoff spot with a losing record at home, at 9-10-0
- Boston has a goal differential of +1 on the year
Free Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins NHL Hockey Prediction:
Morning games, from my view, tend to be lower scoring affairs. If Tuukka Rask starts the game for the Bruins, consider me a big fan of the under. Rask has been incredible this year and should be able to douse some of the Flyers’ scoring prowess.
On the other hand, despite the Flyers’ ineptitude on the defensive side, Boston sits in the bottom 1/3 of the league in goals scored.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 5.5
In an early morning matchup, I like the under to come through.
