The New Jersey Devils are looking for their eighth straight win on Thursday night at home against the Senators. NJ hasn’t put a winning streak like that together since February of 2011 which is some extra incentive for the Metropolitan division leaders.
New Jersey gets almost the perfect team to extend their winning streak against, as the Ottawa Senators come to the Prudential Center the losers of six in a row. It’s no shocker that the Devils price keeps climbing, up to -185 which still seems like it has good value.
Ottawa Senators
Ottawa is bad as their 8 points (second fewest in the NHL) would indicate. But during the Senators’ six game losing streak they’ve had the lead or have been tied late in each of those. This is just a team that cannot close.
Sportsbooks haven’t given up on the Senators (yet) setting them as favorites in each of their last two games. Those, of course, were both losses 2-1 to Philadelphia and 6-4 against the Canucks on Tuesday night.
The Sens’ were favored the last two, but they were also at home. On Thursday night Ottawa is on the road for the first time since a 4-3 loss on November 1st in Tampa Bay which pushed their away mark to 0-4 on the season.
It will be interesting to see who D.J. Smith goes with in net in New Jersey. He finally had to go away from Anton Forsberg a bit after he allowed 4+ goals in three straight starts.
Cam Talbot may have rushed back from injury early with Forsberg’s poor performance, as he gave up 5 goals on just 27 shots to Vancouver on Tuesday in just his second start of the season.
New Jersey Devils
It hasn’t always been dominant, but the Devils’ current 7-game win streak is impressive. Four of those victories have come by one goal, but that’s almost more impressive as this team just finds a way to win.
One thing to note about New Jersey’s win streak is that they’re not just hot right now, they’ve gone 10-1 since dropping the first two games of the season. They are a complete team that ranks 4th in the NHL in goals scored (3.6) and 6th in goals allowed (2.5).
Another nice feat that Ottawa has going for them is that they’re winning games even with starting goaltender out until late December with a strained MCL. Vitek Vanecek has stepped in to post a personal six game win streak and a 2.18 GAA.
NHL Betting Trends:

- Senators are 0-6 in their last 6 overall
- Senators are 2-5 in their last 7 vs. Eastern Conference
- Over is 4-1 in Senators last 5 overall
- Devils are 10-1 in their last 11 overall
- Devils are 5-1 in their last 6 home games
- Over is 8-1 in Devils last 9 vs. Eastern Conference
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 6.5
The Devils have been in mostly close games during their seven game win streak while Ottawa has largely stayed tight with opponents despite losing six in a row. That makes this kind of a limbo game. If the Senators on the +1.5 puck line wasn’t priced all the way up at -160 that might be a play.
Ultimately the way to go here is on the ‘over’. Talbot is still shaking off some rink rust from starting the year on the IL, it’s just up to Ottawa to find the back of the net a couple times.
