Monday night will be an early season match up between Atlantic Division rivals in Detroit when the Red Wings play host to the Ottawa Senators.
The Senators are coming off of a game that required a shoot out before they could get the 4-3 win against Montreal on Saturday.
Detroit has yet to win this season after falling to the Florida Panthers on Saturday 4-1.
The Red Wings were able to get the best of the Senators in their series last year 3-1-1, including splitting the two games that were played in the Motor City.
Despite the efforts of Auston Matthews in the season opener, the Senators were able to come up with a win in overtime.
Their matchup Saturday required a shootout to determine a winner, and Ottawa skated off the ice with a 2-0 record.
They are putting up an average of four goals a game which is currently 5th in the NHL.
The one area on offense where they definitely need to focus some attention is on the power play, where they have yet to convert an opportunity into points.
Despite getting off four shots compared to the two of Montreal, the Senators were not able lite up the lamp in he overtime period.
In the opening round of the shootout, Kyle Turris was able to find the back of the net for Ottawa while Erik Karlsson scored in the fourth round.
Craig Anderson was able to stop 21 shots on the night for the Senators.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have struggled to get anything going with the puck on offense so far this season.
If Detroit wants to continue their lengthy run of playoff appearances, that is something that is going to need to change right away.
So far they have only been able to average 2.5 goals per game this season, ranking them 20th in the NHL.
After two games, they are giving up an average of five goals a night.
Detroit didn’t give their fans much of a reason to stand on their feet Saturday night.
They were outshot 38-22 and only able to put the puck in the net once against the Panthers.
They had already given up two goals by the time they were able to get on the score board. Petr Mrazek was able to make 34 saves, but it wasn’t nearly enough for Detroit to have a chance.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- The Senators are 4-0 in their last 4 games.
- The Red Wings are 0-4 in their last 4 against the Atlantic Division.
Free Ottawa Senators vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction
The Red Wings need to take advantage of playing at home in order to get things turned around and headed in the right direction.
They have lacked explosiveness with the puck and the defense is allowing too many shots on goal.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Detroit Red Wings -133
The Senators have had a rough time on defense and I think Detroit will be given a few nice opportunities.
I like Detroit at home and am giving them the edge at home, despite the fact that they haven’t shown anything yet to deserve it. The Red Wings are giving up 5 goals a game, so this one should have no problem going over 5.5.
