These clubs play for a second time in a week, with the Rangers coming out on top initially. This is a home-and-home for New York, but the Sens had a game versus Philly sandwiched in there as well. Both of these clubs were predicted to be near the bottom of the pile, yet both have shown flashes of competence. These, respectively, are the kind of games both New York and Ottawa need to win if they want any designs whatsoever at an eighth seed in the postseason.
New York Rangers
Everything is bigger and better in the Big Apple, including goalie Hank Lundqvist’s ego. When he lost his mask earlier this week and play continued for a few moments, he strutted over like a crowing rooster, flipping his lettuce and giving the referee a spirited tongue-lashing. Sadly, King Henrik is one of the last top names on the marquee for the Rangers.
This club is rebuilding, but Hank and the lads played well in the first leg of the Ottawa match-up earlier this week, when he made 29 saves in a 4-2 New York victory. The Blueshirts currently sit third in the Metro division, but they sit three points within sixth – so don’t read too much into that. The Sens’ll want to get retribution in their barn this time on Thursday night.
The Sens, along with the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs and a handful of other teams around the league, are a case study in how much value young players offer these days in the NHL. Out of all the players contributing for Ottawa, 27-year old Matt Duchene is the relative greybeard of the group. Thomas Chabot, Brady Tkachuk, Colin White and Alex Formenton are all under age 21 (Formenton recently got sent back down to the OHL, but his blazing speed doubtlessly factors into Ottawa’s plans).
Ottawa is coming off a decent win against a Flyers team that is an absolute dumpster fire lately. In addition to the pups, players acquired in the Erik Karlsson move, Chris Tierney and Dylan DeMelo coming in from San Jose, have played above their heads. Here we are, the little-known Sens, who were supposed to be useless, rank third in the league in goals for (almost 3.6 per game) and a Top 10-ranked power play. It’s only translated to sixth in the Atlantic division, but I think Ottawa is better than expected.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Rangers are 2-9 in their last 11 Thursday games.
- Senators are 5-1 in their last 6 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
- Over is 4-1 in Rangers last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Over is 4-1 in Senators last 5 games following a win.
- Over is 4-1 in Senators last 5 vs. Metropolitan.
Free Ottawa Senators vs. New York Rangers NHL Prediction:
These clubs are actually quite well matched, but the Senators looked pretty cohesive in the win over the Flyers this week, so I’ll call for them to score a few goals against Hammerin’ Hank or backup Alec Georgiev, as Ottawa gets sweet revenge on home ice.
