A classic Original Six match-up occurs in the hallowed hockey shrine city of Montreal on Saturday night; a fitting locale for a ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ national spotlight. Veteran netminder Henrik Lundqvist and his re-tooling Blueshirts of New York travel to take on the Habs. Both teams have raised eyebrows at varying points during the regular season, so it should be a compelling one.
New York Rangers
The Blueshirts are coming off getting stoned 3-0 by the lowly Ottawa Senators, so they’ll perhaps want to exact revenge on some team from eastern Canada. The scoring for the Rangers is done primarily by Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad. It’s not an overly fearsome duo, but they’ve done the job adequately enough. King Hank is having a nice bounceback year, after not looking very good in 2017-18.
For New York to win, they need to get more balanced scoring through the lines, and Lundqvist must be on his game. This is capable with a team like the Canadiens, which can run hot and cold.
Les bleues, blancs et rouges has mostly been impressive this season. Yet, Montreal has been in a trough most recently, losing its last five games. They are sorely in need of a bounceback on Saturday night on national TV at home. Montreal thought it was getting some wind in its sails with the return of franchise defenceman Shea Weber, but it hasn’t translated in the win/loss column yet.
Canadiens’ big-money goalie Carey Price has been up and down this season, but in total he hasn’t been good enough, with just an .899 save percentage and a 3.11 GAA. Those numbers aren’t terrible, but for a world-class goalie that is supposed to be the team’s best player, it doesn’t cut the mustard. There have been some nice storylines – new hot-scoring acquistion Max Domi chief among them – but all is not well in the fishbowl that is Quebec pro hockey.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Rangers are 1-7 in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- Home team is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
- Under is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings.
Free New York Rangers vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL Prediction:
The Rangers have the superior point total, but I think the Canadiens will assert themselves due to all the urgency they need to display at home. Expect Domi and or rejuvenated Tomas Tatar to light the lamp in the Bell Centre Saturday night.
I could see this not being an overly high-scoring affair, as Lundqvist should have his attention channelled following an ugly loss to Ottawa on Thursday night. Still, I envision the home team Habs prevailing.
