It’s an NHL matchup only a bettor could love when the 23-33-10 Red Wings host the 27-28-11 Rangers. With 65 points the Rangers are 14 out of the wild card with 16 games to play.

In that essence Detroit may have more “incentive to lose” as their 56 points are 2nd worst in the league – putting them in striking distance of a top drat pick. Even so, the Red Wings are slight -114 favorites on Thursday.

It will be Henrik Lundqvist in net on Thursday. The veteran will have had 5 days off since his last start looking to expand on a 1-4-1 record over his last six outings. He has held four of those opponents to 3 goals or less however.

Detroit Red Wings

Detroit has pretty much shut it down for the year, not winning a game since Valentine’s Day. That a streak of 8 straight losses although three of them came in OT. Thursday could be a low scoring affair because in addition to the Rangers offensive woes, Detroit has been held to 1 goal in two of the last three games.

It’s easy to bet against the Red Wings right now because their defense has been atrocious. Detroit is 25th or worse in goals, SOG, and penalty kill and has allowed 20 goals total the last four games. Is this what New York needs for an offensive outburst?

Detroit is also going to go with their #1 Jimmy Howard between the pipes. He’s given up 4+ goals in 3 of his past 5 games however which doesn’t make Red Wings bettors feel any comfort.
