After winning three straight, the Islanders dropped a tough 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday and will look to bounce back against the Winnipeg Jets.
The Jets lost their last game to the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are on a 14 game winning streak. The Jets will look to take a win against the Islanders and try to stay relevant in the tough Central Division.
New York Islanders
Barring a Columbus-type winning streak going forward, the Islanders’ hopes for the playoffs are basically all but over at this point. It may seem early, but playing in the Metropolitan Division this year makes it extremely difficult to make the playoffs, especially when you’re the team dead last in that division.
There are frustrations for New York on both sides of the ice, including goaltending. The Islanders just waived netminder Jaroslav Halak after a poor 6-8-5 record and a 3.23 GAA.
Thomas Greiss will be the starter moving forward and he’s been decent for the Islanders, posting an 8-5-0 record and a 2.48 GAA.
Because of poor defense and inconsistent goaltending, the Islanders have given up a lot of goals this year, 111 to be exact. New York is ranked 26th in the league in goals against and that has a lot to do with the disappointing season.
For New York to beat the Jets, the defense is going to have to play much better. The offense isn’t explosive enough to give up four or five goals and still win.
After starting the post-holiday break on the right foot with a solid win against a really good Chicago team, the Jets lost a tough game to a really good, streaking Columbus team. The Jets will have a bit of an easier game playing the Islanders, who are much worse than both Chicago and Columbus.
The Jets can play great defense, which should help take some pressure off the offense against the Islanders. Limiting New York’s scorers – John Tavares and Anders Lee – should make winning this game easy for Winnipeg.
The Jets, while currently out of the playoff hunt, are showing improvement on both sides of the ice. The offense has been good all year, and is starting to improve even more.
Thanks to the rookie Patrik Laine, Mark Schiefele, and captain Blake Wheeler, the Jets have guys who can put the puck in the net and win games.
Laine is looking more and more like a favorite for the Calder Trophy every night. His 19 goals and 11 assists. Schiefele has hit the next level of stardom at age 23, netting 15 goals and adding in 17 assists.
Also, captain Blake Wheeler has shown why he’s the leader of this team.. His 11 goals and 18 assists have helped the Jets a lot.
NHL Betting Trends:

Free New York Islanders vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey Prediction:
Despite having similar poor records, the Jets are a better team than the Islanders thanks to their offensive weapons. New York is bad on both sides of the ice. Winnipeg gets the W at home.
