The Islanders are currently in the top Wild Card spot in the east but have Pittsburgh right behind them and a Florida team who are just six points back of New York on the outside looking in.
Washington have played themselves out of a playoff spot with just six wins over their last 20 tries and the Caps have just eight games left in their schedule.
Through two meetings so far this season, the Capitals have won both games on the road.
New York Islanders
The Islanders are coming off a huge 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils this past Monday. Kyle Palmieri led the way with two goals and one assist, while goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves for his 27th win on the year.
The win added to New York’s 38-28-9 overall record on the season as they head out on the road for three crucial away match-ups. Away from UBS Arena, they’re 16-15-6 and will now have to face the Capitals, Lightning and Hurricanes on the road in succession. Both Tampa Bay and Carolina are in playoff positions with the Hurricanes having already clinched. If the playoffs started today, the Islanders would face the Hurricanes so this could be a preview of a first round match-up.
With a recent record of 4-2 through their past six games and 6-3-1 in their last ten, the Islanders still hold the top Wild Card spot in the East.
Offense
New York owns the 21st best offense in the league with an average of 2.99 goals scored per game and have a 29th ranked power play which is operating at 16.5% this season.
They’ve seemed to have found their scoring touch as of late after scoring three or more goals in five of their most recent six outings.
Bo Horvat leads the way with 37 goals on the season but that’s split between Vancouver and New York. Brock Nelson is close behind with 32 goals to his name and leads the team with 68 points.

Defense
With a fourth-best defense, the Islanders are allowing an average of just 2.68 goals against per game which is backed by a penalty kill that sits inside the top ten at 82.0%.
Goaltending
It’s not officials who will get the start for this game but you’d have to think that the Islanders would go with Ilya Sorokin who is 7-1-1 through his last 9 starts in March and sports an overall record of 27-19-7.
Sorokin sits inside the top five in multiple categories with a 2.39 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and five shutouts.
Washington Capitals
With just a handful of wins since February 12th, the push for the playoffs in Washington may be over at this point. Prior to the start of any games on Tuesday, they were six points and three teams back of the final Wild Card spot in the east. They’ve won just three of their last ten games heading in to the first of a back-to-back set.
The Capitals have a 34-32-8 overall record while posting a 17-14-5 tally in Washington.
Offense
With an average of 3.16 goals scored per game on offense, the Capitals have the 18th best offense in the NHL. On the man advantage, they sit in the 14th slot with a 21.9% success rate.
Washington has just one player who has hit the 20-goal mark in Alex Ovechkin who lit the lamp 42 times this year and also leads the team with 72 points on the year.
They’ve scored at least three goals in four straight games and seven of their last eight.
Defense
On the backend the Caps are allowing an average of 3.08 goals against which puts them in the 14th slot as of now. On the penalty kill, they’ve been solid with a sixth best 82.9% kill rate on the year.
Goaltending
In the crease, they’ve split the starts recently between Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren.
Kuemper is 21-23-5 with a 2.76 goals against average and a .911 save percentage on the season.
Lindgren has an improved 13-9-3 tally with a bloated 3.02 GAA and a .898 save percentage on the year.

Free New York Islanders vs. Washington Capitals NHL Prediction
The Islanders are in need of wins to keep up with the rat race that is the Wild Card picture in the east and have been playing as such. They’ve been getting W’s as of late and have been getting some much needed goal scoring to back up the solid performance by Ilya Sorokin.
With these odds and for the reasons above, I’m taking New York on the money line to come out ahead in this one.
