The New York Islanders open their 2026-27 regular season Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET.
New York finished its preseason 1-3-0 under Pete DeBoer, with its lone victory coming against the Rangers. The Islanders now get a Toronto team playing for the second straight night.
The Leafs opened Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Montreal. William Nylander scored both Toronto goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 of 24 shots in his Leafs debut.
Toronto has no recovery day, while New York arrives rested after owning this matchup last season.
The Islanders swept all three meetings from Toronto last season, including a 5-3 victory in April. Jim Hiller’s Leafs have a different look now, but New York already knows it can make this matchup uncomfortable.

Toronto scored twice on 28 shots in its opener, with Nylander supplying both goals. The Leafs went scoreless on the power play.

The Islanders went 3-for-5 on the power play in that victory. Their other three exhibition games produced three losses and only three combined goals.
Schaefer enters his second NHL season after scoring 23 goals as a rookie. He gives DeBoer’s club another legitimate offensive threat from the blue line.
New York was also a respectable 21-17-3 away from home last season, so this isn’t a team that needs UBS Arena to compete.

Ilya Sorokin is expected to start for New York after going 29-24-2 with a 2.68 GAA and seven shutouts last season. He gives the Islanders a proven last line of defense against Toronto’s dangerous top-end scorers.
Anthony Stolarz is expected for Toronto after Bobrovsky started Tuesday. Stolarz went 10-10-3 with a 3.28 GAA and .893 save percentage last season.

Forget the original home-road argument because Toronto wasn’t dominant at Scotiabank Arena last season, and the Islanders were perfectly capable travelers. This comes down to what Toronto looks like after aggressively changing its roster and immediately losing its opener.
Nylander scoring twice Tuesday was encouraging. Getting Matthews, Marchenko, Tavares and the rest of this attack involved would make Toronto considerably tougher to contain for three periods.
The Islanders owned this matchup last season, but -121 is short enough for me to back Toronto’s response.
New York deserves respect after sweeping all three meetings last season, and an expected Sorokin start is hardly a gift for Toronto. The Islanders can make this ugly if the Leafs get impatient, especially after playing the night before.
Still, I like the urgency from a Toronto team trying to avoid opening 0-2 at home. There is enough scoring talent here to make New York defend far more than the Leafs managed in last season’s series.
At this price, I’ll take the response spot. Give me Maple Leafs ML -121.
