New York looked overmatched in the game one, even coming off a tough game 7 win over the Flyers last round. Tampa Bay might just be too much, not just in the Eastern Conference, but for the Stanley Cup Finals as well.
New York Islanders
The Islanders didn’t have a lot going for them in game one and look like they’ll be lucky to even take one in this series. NYI managed just 24 SOG and went through two goaltenders in the big 7 goal defeat.
Barry Trotz’s team had a top 10 scoring defense during the regular season but are in disarray after Tampa Bay tallied 8 goals on 34 shots in game one. New York was just 22nd in offensive scoring and 28th in SOG before the restart.
Who do the Islanders send in net for game two? Thomas Greiss was rocked for 3 goals in the 1st period in game one while facing just 9 shots. Semyon Varlamov was also lit up for 5 goals while facing 29 shots.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay demoralized the Islanders in game one and flexed what looks like championship muscles. The Lightning just dispersed of the top scoring team in the NHL, Boston, in five games and had no problem with NYI in game one.
The Islanders would have been somewhere around the 7 seed under normal playoff circumstances. The fact that New York has made it this far is impressive, but it doesn’t look like they have any chance to advance.
Andrei Vasilevskiy had a workmanlike 22 saves on 24 attempts in game one. He gives Tampa Bay a great counter in net to go along with their #1 ranked scoring offense from the regular season.
