Despite being what would have been around a 7th seed in the regular season, the Islanders look to be on the verge of going on a nice run in this restart. New York took the series opener 4-0 on Monday.
Philadelphia had a tough fought opening round with the Canadiens and have yet to look like the team that was 3-0 in the round-robin seeding round. Tying up this semifinals series in game two becomes imperative for Philly.
New York Islanders
New York might be on the verge of something in this postseason. After taking out the team with the 3rd most points in the East during the regular season, Washington, the Islanders can go up 2-0 on the new 1 seed Philadelphia.
The 4-0 win on Monday did as much for the Islanders exerting mental control over the Flyers as it did the physical domination. NYI won 5-3, 4-3, and 5-3 during three regular season meetings and have now taken five straight in the series.
Semyon Varlamov navigated his second straight SO in net for the Islanders and has now allowed a goal or less in 3 of the last 4. The Flyers were a top 7 scoring offense during the regular season.
Philadelphia Flyers
More of a concern than the Flyers’ lack of offense on Monday has to be their defense giving up four scores (one being an empty net).
Philadelphia was the #1 ranked defense in SOG during the regular season and were top 10 in goals against. New York didn’t get off a ton of shots (both teams had 29) but that almost makes matters worse.
Carter Hart is definitely capable of a bounce-back game in net. He had two shutouts in the series against Montreal but has now allowed 9 over the last three games. New York has scored 4+ in 5 of their last 7.
