The Battle of the Big Apple ensues on Wednesday night at iconic MSG. The visiting Islanders, who play in Brooklyn (sort of) and long to be back to their native Long Island, travel across town to take on the Blueshirts, who have been playing over their heads so far this season.
New York Islanders
Old, crusty guru GM Lou Lamoriello is back in the tri-state area, which is where he surely feels most comfortable after his years of stewardship with the New Jersey Devils. He’s brought a layer of tough love and discipline to the Isles’ franchise, which needs something to focus on after the departure of franchise cornerstone John Tavares to – where else? – Lou’s old employer, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Early reports are looking OK for the Isles. They sit fourth in a jam-packed Metro division, and though they lost big to Dallas in their last game, New York scored 12 goals in the two previous, including a drubbing of the crosstown Rangers a few days ago. The quartet of Brock Nelson, sophomore sensation Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee and Josh Bailey is the majority of the offense for the Islanders, and it’s a nice cluster to have.
New York Rangers
Everyone was basically in agreement that the Rangers were in a rebuild mode at the start of the season, but here we are and New York sits second in the division. People were feeling bad for veteran star goalie and team leader Henrik Lundqvist, but he says he’s happy to stay on Broadway and he’s responded with a line of a .919 save percentage and a goals-against slightly north of two and half. For having a bad team in front of him, that’s not bad.
Chris Kreider has been leading the way in the scoring department. And don’t look now, but the supposedly cellar-dwelling Rangers have won 8 of their last 10 games. I don’t doubt the Islanders will come out with some snark to their game, but that was one of the only recent contests the Blueshirts weren’t successful in. They’ll want retribution on home ice.

Free New York Islanders vs. New York Rangers NHL Prediction:
It’s a tough one to call as there isn’t much to separate these teams from a talent perspective, but the fact the game is in the Rangers’ barn and they’ll have revenge on their minds after last week’s 7-5 goal fest is enough for me to call this one in the home team’s favor.
It’ll be interesting to see if Islanders goalie Robin Lehner starts, as his nice story about coming back from depression and alcoholism continues. Either way, expect a fun contest.
