The New York Islanders have to be one of the biggest surprises of the year, as they now sit atop the division and look to have every chance of bringing home Lord Stanley’s Cup. They get one of the weaker opponents in the division this Saturday, but the Devils have shown that they are not an easy win, so the Islanders will need to show up in order to pick up the victory.
The New Jersey Devils will be firmly concentrated as an organization on next year, as they only lead the Buffalo Sabres by 3 points which has to be a brutally disappointing place to be for the Devils given the Sabres struggles.
New York Islanders
The New York Islanders are rolling with 7 straight wins and amazingly beat the Sabres 3 times in a row during that stretch by the exact scoreline of 5-2 each time. Obviously by them playing the Sabres 3 times during that 7 game winning stretch the strength of competition will be questioned, but the Islanders can only beat what is in front of them and beat them they did.
Their last game was the first half of this 2 game series, as the Islanders were able to get the victory over the Devils by a score of 5-3 and they will look to build a lead atop the division by producing a repeat of that result.
Look out for Matthew Barzal and Anders Lee here as both of these centers have been solid combining for 42 points in just 27 games and they should be in a nice spot to add to those stats here against the Devils.
Without question the Islanders will have an edge in terms of the goal-tending here, as Semyon Varlamov is slated for the start and he is having a Vezina level season and is a huge reason the Islanders are having the success they are having this year. He is coming in here with a 2.03 goals against average and a .929% save percentage which are numbers which speak for themselves.
New Jersey Devils
It has been hard to be a New Jersey Devils fan lately, as this team has only been able to pick up 2 wins in their last 12 games, and it looks like they may be slated for yet another loss as they take on the table-toppers the Islanders on Saturday.
One of the big positives the devils will be able to take out of this season, is that Jack Hughes is playing much better and is looking more and more like a solid NHL player, as he now has 6 goals and 8 assists in just 23 games which is a nice improvement on last year.
The Devils will roll with Mckenzie Blackwood who is having an alright season putting up a .900% save percentage and a 3.13 goals against average and he will get one tough test here with Varlamov on the opposite side of the ice.
NHL Betting Trends:

Free New York Islanders vs. New Jersey Devils NHL Prediction:
The New York Islanders are a real solid team, and you do feel like they are due for a loss, but it is going to take much more than the +145 on offer for the Devils to make me make a stand against this rolling Islanders team. When I first looked at this matchup I was expecting a number in the -200 or -190 range, so I see clear line value here especially is Varlamov becomes the confirmed starter, as he makes a massive difference to this team.
