The New York Islanders head to New Jersey just one day after taking on the red-hot Washington Capitals. Both teams are looking to separate themselves from the rest of the Metropolitan Division, and both know how important these two points are.
New York
The Islanders are in the upper half of the congested Eastern Conference with just 30 games remaining.
The Islanders are one of the NHL’s best offensive teams scoring 2.85 goals per game.
They currently rank in the top-10 in goals, shots on goal and shooting percentage. The defense hasn’t been as efficient as the offense, but New York has two quality goaltenders in Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss who have proven they can get the job done this season.

The Islanders have struggled on the road but they’ve fared well within the highly-competitive Metropolitan Division.
New York has also done well during the second leg of back-to-back games this year with a 6-3 record. However, the Islanders are just 2-5 in their last seven road games.
New Jersey
Led by a stingy defense and one of the best goaltenders in the league, the New Jersey Devils are within striking distance of both the New York Rangers and New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.
Cory Schneider has been immaculate in net this season with a GAA of 2.04 and a save percentage of .928. Schneider has catapulted New Jersey’s defense to 1st in the league in goals allowed as the team is giving up just 2.24 per game.
Unfortunately, the Devils’ offense is terrible. New Jersey ranks dead last in both goals scored and shots on goal which has hurt them badly in the standings.
Though they’ve struggled to put pucks in the net, the Devils are a team built to succeed during the real grinders. They’re better suited to win the 2-1-type matchups as opposed to the games where they have to score at least 4 goals to win.

The Devils just aren’t built for those shootouts, and Schneider’s masterful season in net has helped them win even when they’re only scoring 2 goals per game.
Only three times in Schneider’s last 17 starts has the Devils’ game total gone over 5. That statistic sets up nicely for the total in this game.

Free New York Islanders vs. New Jersey Devils NHL Hockey Prediction
These two teams have met three times this season and the total has yet to go over 5.
The Islanders are coming off a hard-fought game against the NHL’s best team and I’m not sure they’ll be able to do much offensively against the league’s best defense.
The Devils, on the other hand, can’t score on anybody. This should be another grinder.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: UNDER 5
Neither team will be able to score much and both defenses will be sure to keep the opposing offenses in check.
