The Islanders are hanging at 11-6 which has been good enough for second place in a tipsy topsy Metropolitan that sees the Devils in first place and the Penguins and Capitals bringing up the rear (along with Columbus).
Part of New York’s success this year has been a solid 5-3 road record, which will be put to the test on Thursday against a Nashville team that has won two straight on their current home stand.
The Predators have beat the Rangers and Wild both by the score of 2-1 in their last two at Bridgestone Arena. That’s obviously not a ton of offense, but also great defense led by Juuse Saros in net – the likely starter in the Islanders vs Nashville matchup.
New York Islanders
You have to throw out the Islanders’ 2-0 loss at home to Arizona on November 10th as an anomaly. New York was a huge -268 favorite in that game and simply had a meltdown. NY has won four of their last five besides that Coyotes loss though, scoring 4+ goals in each of those victories.
It’s not a shocker that the Islanders have found the back of the net in some recent wins, as they are a top 10 goal scoring team (3.3). Matthew Barzal has 8 assists in the last seven games while Brock Nelson has added five goals in that span.
Aside from a top 10 defense the Islanders also rank sixth in goals allowed (2.6) the type of balance that gives them high hopes for 2022/23. Semyon Varlamov has started the last three Islanders road games, but we could also see Ilya Sorokin who gets a bulk of the time in net for New York this season.
Nashville Predators
Nashville has only scored four total goals their last two games, but they’ve also only allowed two in quality wins over Minnesota and the Rangers. Juuse Saros has been between the pipes in both of those contests, stopping 66 of 68 SOG.
Saros had been having some struggles, giving up 13 goals over a three start span – but those were also all on the road. He has a 2.14 GAA at home compared to 5.17 away from Bridgestone Arena.
Saros probably shouldn’t expect a ton of offensive help again on Thursday night as the Predators are 29th in the NHL in scoring. Despite their two straight wins the Predators have been outshot 43-68 which simply isn’t sustainable.
