Coming off a 3-0 win over Montreal, the Islanders head to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets in a Metropolitan Division matchup.
Columbus, coming off a loss to Nashville, have slipped to 4th in the Metropolitan Division after struggling over the past month or so. The team hasn’t looked nearly as tough as it did during the 16-game winning streak.
New York Islanders
New York has been a completely different hockey team under new head coach Doug Weight. At 12-4-2 since Weight took over, the Islanders are still very much in the hunt for a playoff spot and a win against fellow Metropolitan team Columbus would go a long way.
The Islanders have been much better on both sides of the ice, especially on defense.
The team has allowed five goals in the last three games, all wins, and are looking much stronger, shutting down teams with arguably good offenses like Montreal.
The team’s been better offensively as well. Center Anders Lee is having the best season of his career. He has 23 goals and 14 assists including two goals and an assist in his last five games.
Captain John Tavares leads the team with 52 total points. He has 23 goals and 29 assists, including three goals and three assists in his last five games. Tavares has been a wonderful leader for this team and has been a major reason why the Islanders are still in the hunt.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus has really struggled over the past few weeks, playing .500 hockey while fighting for a playoff spot in the toughest division in the NHL.
The offense has been weak, the defense has been inconsistent, and the goaltending of Sergei Bobrovsky has been shaky at best.
The team is still fighting, with a 5-4-1 record over the last 10 games, but hasn’t played nearly as well recently. The offense has cooled off and that includes the team’s leading scorer Cam Atkinson.
On the year, Atkinson has 27 goals and 23 assists. In his last five games, he has a goal and an assist. In his last 10, he has three goals and an assist after having 23 goals and 22 assists in his first 48 games.
Captain Nick Foligno’s offensive output has slowed as well. On the season, he has 20 goals and 22 assists for the Blue Jackets. In his last five, he has two goals but no assists and in his last 10, he has three goals and no assists.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Columbus is 1-7 ATS in the last eight games
- The Total has gone UNDER in four of New York’s last six games on the road
Free New York Islanders vs. Columbus Blue Jackets NHL Hockey Prediction:
There’s a reason this Columbus team has slipped to 4th in the Metropolitan despite having a 16-game win streak on its record. The defense has gotten worse and the goaltending has been shaky. New York looks like a different, much better team, and should get the W in this one.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: New York ML
New York has been wonderful under Doug Weight. Columbus has looked shaky for the last month or so. I like the New York money line in this one.
