It’s a tale of two schedules when the Devils and Jets meet up on Friday night at the Canada Life Centre. New Jersey heads to Manitoba following a 5-2 loss to the Wild on Thursday night, and meanwhile Winnipeg hasn’t played since a 1-0 home loss to Arizona on Monday.
Neither team is playing well right now, so Winnipeg being such a huge favorite is likely based solely on any fatigue New Jersey may have on 0 days rest. At first glance, -194 still seems like an insane price to pay for a Jets team that has lost six of their last seven.
New Jersey Devils
New Jersey will likely rest Mackenzie Blackwood as they play on the back to back, and it wouldn’t hurt the Devils goaltender to take a little breather anyways. Blackwood has allowed 9 goals in his last two starts, and New Jersey has lost 7 of his last 9 outings overall.
It will likely be Jonathan Bernier between the pipes on Friday night, and he has a chance to shine to put up a good performance against a Jets team that has been held to 2 goals or less in six of their last seven games. Bernier allowed 3 goals on 30 SOG in his last start on November 26th however.
The only problem with New Jersey facing a Winnipeg offense that is in a rut is that they aren’t exactly finding the back of the net themselves. The Devils have been held to 2 goals or less in four of their last five, making Friday’s total of 5.5 look like a solid play towards the ‘under.’
Winnipeg Jets
Can Winnipeg get back on track with the extra rest and against a team playing on the back to back? If so, where do they get the offense from? Leading scorer Kyle Connor has been blanked in four of the last five games, and second leading scorer Pierre-Luc Dubois has just one goal over that span.
Connor Hellebuyck should get the nod in net for the sixth straight game, especially with Winnipeg having the last four nights off. Hellebuyck has dropped four of his last five, but a lot of that is due to getting no offensive support as he has given up two goals or less in three of those defeats.
One thing going for Winnipeg is that they are 7-3-1 at home on the season. New Jersey is just 3-4-2 on the road as well and have dropped four of their last five away from the Prudential Center. The Devils have also dropped two of their last eight playing on the back to back.

Free New Jersey Devils vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Prediction
This is a tough game to handicap with two teams playing not very well right now, but by default Winnipeg would get the edge playing at home with extra rest while New Jersey is on the back to back.
That being said, nobody should be paying -194 for Winnipeg right now even if they do end up winning this game 5-0. Instead, this is two struggling offenses meeting up which makes this game a total play. The Jets offense could even be a bit rusty having most of the week off.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: UNDER 5.5
It does help the ‘under’ that Blackwood is sitting for New Jersey as well.
