Oddsmakers aren’t expecting much more than a glorified shootaround when the Devils visit the Capitals on Friday night. It makes sense, New Jersey is the 2nd worst team in the East and Washington the 2nd best.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils had a couple leads in Thursday’s game, but they could barely hold any of them even for a minute. New Jersey scored just 1:23 into that tilt, but gave up the equalizer only two minutes later.
New Jersey also took a 2-1 lead at one point in the 2nd period on a Nicholas Merkley score. Once again, the Caps tied things up just :55 seconds later on a Dmitry Orlov slap shot. It seems like Washington can score any time they really want to.
Losing to the Capitals is nothing new for New Jersey though, as they’ve fallen to 0-5 vs. Washington on the season. 4 of those 5 losses have been by 1 goal though (NJ +1.5 is -130).
It will be a bit tougher to keep things close for New Jersey on Friday since they used Mackenzie Blackwood in Thursday’s loss. Scott Wedgewood will likely get the nod in net, and he’s allowed 2 goals or less in two of his last three.
Washington Capitals
The Caps gave up a quick one on Thursday and were outshot 11-4 in the 1st period. A slow start was a little bit expected though as Washington hadn’t played since last Saturday.
Washington should remain pretty well rested for Friday’s rematch despite playing on 0 days rest. They had those four days off prior to Thursday’s game and will also be playing their 4th straight home game.
Peter Laviolette did burn up his top goaltender as well in game one. Vitek Vanecek allowed 3 goals on just 24 New Jersey shots, but still picked up his fourth straight win. Vanecek allowed one goal total his previous two starts.
Instead it will be Ilya Samsonov manning the net vs. the Devils in game two. He’s 6-1 on the year, that lone loss coming last Saturday despite allowing just 2 goals in a 1-3 loss to the Rangers.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Devils are 6-14 last 20 overall
- Devils are 4-12 last 16 as an underdog
- Over is 4-1 in Devils last 5 road games
- Under is 6-2 in Devils last 8 overall
- Capitals are 5-1 last 6 home games
- Capitals are 13-3 last 16 overall
- Under is 3-1-1 in Capitals last 5 overall
- Devils are 3-14 last 17 in Washington
- Over is 4-0 last 4 in Washington
Free New Jersey Devils vs. Washington Capitals NHL Prediction:
Two teams are on 0 days rest and with backup goaltenders and they combined for 7 scores on Thursday while fresh. That would lean towards another high scoring game, but neither Samsonov or Wedgewood have been completely horrible in backup roles.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 6
it’s also possible that Washington runs away with this one, completely shutting down the Devils. Still good for the under play.
