The New Jersey Devils make a cross-country trip to the Left Coast to tangle with the playoff-contending San Jose Sharks in Silicon Valley. Last year’s Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall will be looking to take a good result back to the Eastern Seaboard.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils beat the lowly Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, but before that they had dropped their last six games in a row. If the Devils haven’t completely come apart at the seams, they are, at the very least, in rough shape. The recent slump sees Jersey in last in the Eastern Conference with 25 points, although with a record just two games under .500, it shows how much parity there is in the East.

Team star Taylor Hall has been productive as expected (30 points in 27 games), but there still isn’t enough depth in the Jersey swamp. After winger Kyle Palmieri and his 14 goals, the offense has been very meagre for the Devils after that pair. Not only that, but in the net, Keith Kinkaid grades at slightly above average; he’s been filling in for star Cory Schneider, who has missed significant time with a concussion. Schneider, meanwhile, is back and has played seven games, but he isn’t his normal self. His stats of an .862 save percentage and a GAA of 4.19 is, frankly, terrible.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks have been another underachieving team, although they started from a much more elevated place than the Devils did this season. San Jose currently sits sixth in the Western Conference, tied with the Dallas Stars and the Anaheim Ducks. They’re also tied with the Ducks for second in the Pacific division. It’s not all that bad, but on talent and potential, the Sharks should be the best team in their division, easily.

They probably have too much ability to not figure things out eventually. Things have actually been looking up most recently; the Sharks have taken a bite out of three of their last four opponents, scoring 16 goals in that span. The quartet of Logan Couture, Brent Burns, Timo Meier and Joe Pavelski does the bulk of the offensive heavy lifting for San Jose. The goaltending has just been OK, while starter Martin Jones was excellent a year ago. It would help if he could re-discover his mojo.
Free New Jersey Devils vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Prediction:
The Devils could potential be another bucket of chum for the Sharks to chow down on in their quest to re-establish themselves atop the West. Hall can always go off for a big game, but without better netminding, the Sharks should be able to light the lamp a few times in the friendly confines of the SAP Center.
Expect the depth and the fluid skating on the blueline for the Sharks (Burns, Erik Karlsson and Marc-Eduoard Vlasic spring to mind) to distance the home side from New Jersey.
