This is a matchup that holds big implications for both teams. The Panthers are in a tight race for top spot in the Atlantic Division, and the Devils are hanging onto their ever shrinking playoff hopes by just a thread.
The Devils definitely have more to lose in this one, and the Panthers have a chance to all but end the Devils’ playoff chances.
New Jersey Devils
All things considered, this Devils team has had a pretty good year. This was a really slapped together roster that looked like it was just in place to be able to put a team on the ice every night.
No one expected the Devils to be hanging around a wildcard spot this late in the season, but give them credit…in true Devils form, this team has made a habit of playing tight checking hockey and grinding out wins.
Goaltending has been a huge factor for this team as well this year and Corey Schneider was putting together a Vezina-quality season before he was sidelined with a sprained MCL.
Goalies Keith Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood filled in quite admirably in the All-Star’s absence, with the former posting a very strong 39-save performance in a 2-1 win over the Bruins on Tuesday.
Goals are not easy to come by, but deadline acquisition Devante Smith-Pelley has found a home in New Jersey and has added some grit around the net.
The Panthers seem like they might be the Colorado Avalanche of 2013, or the Calgary Flames of last year. I think they’re just a bit too early on their ascension.
Granted, they play in a very weak division that was there for the taking, but like most young teams, the Panthers show signs of brilliance at times, and at others you’re left scratching your head.
Nothing is more a microcosm of the team than their last two games which were a 5-2 beating of the Tampa Bay Lightning…on the road, followed by getting thumped 5-2 on home ice by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Young teams struggle with consistency more than anything, and this team isn’t much different.
The talent is there and Jaromir Jagr is a great leader and example for the young guys like Aaron Ekblad, Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau and Vincent Trochek; the fact is however, that Jagr is 44 years old and the core is all 23 or younger.
Another year out of the playoffs wouldn’t necessarily have been a bad thing for this team that probably needs one more solid draft year before they can be considered real contenders in the East.

Free New Jersey Devils vs. Florida Panthers NHL Hockey Prediction
The Devils are playing with house money right now, no one expected them to be where they are and they’re playing a Panthers team that hasn’t quite clinched a playoff spot, but barring a major collapse, will be in the post-season this year.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Devils ML.
I like the hungry Devils to keep grinding along, especially with the chance that Schneider could be back in goal. The Devils as the underdog are a good pick.
