So as it stands right now I cannot find any available puckline prices which is usually the case with the NHL markets prior to puck drops. But I will provide an update on that after posting this because Edmonton Oiler pucklines are the hottest market in sports right now.
5 of their 7 wins have covered the -1.5 line for plus money so until that goes cold I think it’s silly not to bet it. With that being said they are going into a matchup Thursday against one of the hottest teams in hockey, the New Jersey Devils.
A lot of these two squads stats are pretty similar give or take a few and both teams play a similar style of game. High octane offence, take risks and take a helluva a lot of shots on goal.
Information on who is going to start is shaky at the moment but it’s expected that Vanecek will get the start for New Jersey who is having a solid start to the year, and if everything that has been talked about surrounding the Oilers in recent weeks it’s expected that Skinner will get the nod for Edmonton.
So, with all that in mind let’s dive into yet another installment of Lavs Oilers gambling takes this season shall we?
New Jersey Devils
The Devils are far too low on people’s power rankings this season in my honest opinion. The general consensus among hockey pundits is that these kids are over-achieving at the moment and other teams ahead of them are under-achieving.
This is not a good take. The Devils are here and they are here to stay.
This team plays with a ton of speed, they create off the rush and as said before they are second in the entire league in shots on goal per game with 39. Plus, they are first in the league at shots on goal allowed per game with 21.8 which is absurdly low.
Goaltending is still a question mark you never really know what you’re going to get but Vanecek’s numbers to start the year are respectable. 2.08 GAA and a .903 save %.
Edmonton Oilers
Lowetide from the Athletic discussed how to get Holloway more minutes in an article this morning and neither of his solutions I agreed with personally. The kid is showing great promise when he’s on the ice as a determined, physical and talented forward with serious top 6 potential.
The arguments were, send him down to Bakersfield to play in the top 6 for 10 games which is the path of least resistance and aid his development, or move Yamamoto out of the top 6, Puljujarvi into his vacated spot and move Holloway to the third line.
Or, just keep him where he is.
It seems as though he missed an option (respectfully, I love Lowetide), that being moving Yams down to the fourth line due to his lack of production, keeping JP where he is because that line continues to buzz, and putting Holloway on the line with Kane and Draisaitl.
Holloway relentlessly digs for pucks in a similar fashion as Hyman who could remain with McDavid and RNH. Seeing Holloway do that with his size and skill and the playmaking and finishing abilities of Kane and Draisaitl could be absolutely lethal.

I really am skeptical of this bet here due to how evenly matched these two teams are and the total is heavily juiced to the under currently making a puckline take pretty hard.
But until these Oilers cool off their scoring I just cannot stop taking plus money on them. The shots allowed on goal per game stat of the Devils is also concerning.
However, the Devils strength of schedule this year is incredibly weak. Their ten games this year have been against;
PHI, DET, ANA, NYI, SJ, WAS, DET, COL, CLB, VAN.
The win over Colorado is impressive but they are out some key players due to injury and they are off to an unusually slow start. The Devils have not faced a juggernaut like the Oilers yet who also fire a million pucks on the net.
I love the Devils and this is a risky pick, I concede, but I am riding the hot offence here at home. Gimme the Oil puckline.
And as a bonus pick I am going to sprinkle the over at plus money because I think the Devils will take advantage of the poor Oilers defensive structure which they desperately need to correct as well as their penalty kill which is 26th in the league.
