This is is the second of three meetings on the season between these two clubs. New Jersey took the first contest 3-1 which came back in late November but things have changed since then.
New Jersey Devils
Sitting 3rd in the league and 2nd in the Metropolitan Division with 98 points, the New Jersey Devils are currently in a playoff spot.
They’ve amassed a 45-18-8 record overall on the season and have an absolutely stellar 26-5-4 road tally. That being said, they’ve struggled recently and have dropped four of their most recent five games while being outscored 14-7 in those losses.
The Devils have just 11 games left in the regular season and will look to bump the slump as they head into the playoffs.
Offence
New Jersey has a 6th ranked offense, averaging 3.45 goals scored per game and own a below-averaged power play which ranks 19th with a 20.8% success rate on the season. They have just a single goal on the man advantage in their last 14 opportunities over the past seven games.
It’s not for a lack of trying though. They’re averaging a fourth-best 34.6 shots on net per game this season.
The Devils quietly have three 30-goal scorers with Jack Hughes leading the way with 37 goals and 81 points thus far on the year.

Defense
They’ve played a tight game in their own end this season which has added up to fourth-best defense and an average of 2.66 goals against per game. Their penalty kill game ranks inside the top ten, in the 8th slot, with a kill rate of 82.3% on the year.
From the back end, Dougie Hamilton has restored his offensive capabilities with 66 points and a +22 rating in 71 games.
Goaltending
The play of New Jersey’s goaltenders this season has been a major positive overall and has contributed to their solid defensive numbers. They are tied for the 10th best team save percentage at .906 on the season.
Vitek Vanecek is one win away from his first 30 win season and sits inside the top ten in multiple goalie categories for his win/loss record and goals against average. He has a 29-8-4 tally to go with his 2.49 GAA and a .909 save percentage.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres’ push for the playoffs has fallen flat over the past three weeks. They were a handful of games above .500 prior to the end of February but now sit with a 33-31-6 record with just two wins and six points over their past 12 games.
Offense
All season, the strength for Buffalo has been their potent offense and their ability to outscored the problems in their own end.
Well, that was until the above mentioned two wins in 12 games. In that span, they’ve averaged just 2.58 goals scored which is down nearly a whole goal from their 3rd ranked 3.57 season average. They’ve scored just five goals in their past three games which includes being shutout by Boston last Sunday.
They have a 5th ranked power play on the season, operating at 24.6%.
The Sabres have five players with at least 25 goals and three who have reached the 30-goal plateau. Tage Thompson leads the team with his 43 goals and 88 points this year.
Defense
Overall, the Sabres have tended to score a ton this year but also give up quite a bit back the other way.
They enter with the 29th ranked defense, averaging 3.73 goals against per game but more recently have given up nearly 5.00 goals against since the end of February.
That includes back-to-back games where they’ve allowed 7 goals against and the last four games where they’ve given up at least 5 on the board.
Buffalo has a 30th ranked penalty kill which has a 72.2% success rate.
Goaltending
Buffalo has a 27th ranked team save percentage at just .887 while using three different goalies this year.
More recently, they’ve swapped back and forth between Craig Anderson and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
Andersen was pulled in Buffalo’s last game after allowing 7 goals on 20 shot to Nashville. He has a 10-11-2 record to go with a 3.07 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.
Luukkonen hasn’t won in his last 5 starts adding to his 15-11-4 tally which is paired with a 3.62 GAA and a save percentage of .891 on the year.

Free New Jersey Devils vs. Buffalo Sabres NHL Prediction
With both teams in a bit of a slump as the season winds down, I wouldn’t be surprised for them to come out swinging.
Two teams who have the potential to put up the goals and that can take advantage of each other’s weaknesses when it comes to special teams.
Granted, it could be the Devils who are the ones breaking out of the slump and carrying the load but all that matter is that they pump the red light.
Take the over at 6.5.
