The Boston Bruins have had the fortune of playing in the mediocre Atlantic Division this season, and currently sit in 3rd with 72 points, two ahead of the trailing Toronto Maple Leafs.
Meanwhile, New Jersey’s season has gone about as poorly as it could and playing in the best division in hockey has certainly not helped any.
New Jersey Devils
The deadline was pretty quiet for the Devils, trading away Kyle Quincey for Dalton Prout and P.A. Parenteau for a 6th round selection in this June’s draft.
The team will need some serious help this off-season- could they possibly convince Kevin Shattenkirk to sign? If so, it’ll be very costly.
New Jersey made a big splash last off-season, acquiring Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson. While Hall leads the team in points, with 41, they move hasn’t made up for the team’s overall scoring woes. The Devils sit 28th overall in goals per game at 2.3.
Subtracting Larsson has hurt the backend, which was already thin to begin with. The leading point-getter on the blueline in Damon Severson, who has 27 on the season, but with a minus-28 rating. NJ ranks 20th overall in goals against at 2.8 per game.
Cory Schneider had done his best to keep his team afloat, though he struggled for a month or two near the beginning of the year.
On the season, he owns a .914 SV% and a 2.64 GAA, playing behind one of the worst defensive units.
The Bruins added a depth winger with some speed at Wednesday’s deadline, acquiring Drew Stafford from Winnipeg for a conditional 6th round pick. Boston has performed well since the firing of Claude Julien, the former head coach whose tenure with Boston spanned a decade.
Brad Marchand has solidified himself as one of the game’s top snipers, after netting 37 last season and now tallying 29 on the year in 2016-17. Marchand is tied for 3rd in the league in points, along with the likes of Sidney Crosby and Brent Burns, with 67.
Torey Krug leads the Bruins back-end with 41 points, sitting 23 ahead of Zdeno Chara, who is second in points on Boston’s blueline.
Youngster, Brandon Carlo, has performed well and brings a towering presence that could eventually fill Chara’s role in the near future.
Tuukka Rask has handled the majority of the work in net, yet again, appearing in 51 games this season. Rask has 30 wins with a .913 SV% and a 2.26 GAA.
With Boston in the thick of the playoff race, it’s unlikely he’ll be getting any additional days off down the stretch than originally planned.

Free New Jersey Devils vs. Boston Bruins NHL Hockey Prediction:
New Jersey is essentially just playing for pride, and to be a spoiler, at this point of the season. The group will look toward next season to re-establish themselves as a playoff threat, but will need some serious re-tooling in the off-season.
Boston, meanwhile, needs every win they can get and should come out strong to get this win.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Boston -1.5
I always like the team who has something to play for, especially playing at home against a weak opponent.
