Tuesday night’s marquee Western Conference match-up sees the Nashville Predators visiting Silicon Valley to do battle with the San Jose Sharks in the Shark Tank. The visiting Preds are the league’s top team currently, while the Sharks are expected to be in the mix when it’s all said and done come playoff time.
Everything is going well in Smashville to date. The Predators’ 26 points is tops in the NHL, and they’ve won their last five games. Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen are driving the offensive numbers, but the Preds have always had a team-centric approach under veteran GM David Poile, and coaches Barry Trotz (for years) and then more recently, Peter Laviolette.
If Nashville get reliable goaltending from Pekka Rinne, they are going to be very tough to beat. Ranking second in the league in goals for (3.5 per game) and tops in goals allowed (2.19) is nothing but a good look. The blueline has been stacked seemingly forever, with studs like Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis, P.K. Subban, Mattias Ekholm and even someone unheralded like Dan Hamhuis. In short, I don’t envy the competition in the Central division.
San Jose Sharks
But hey, the Sharks are stacked in their own right. Veteran Joe Thornton is back from injury, and he’s been finding the scoresheet lately. He joins other stat-mongers like Timo Meier, Joe Pavelski, Joonas Donskoi, Evander Kane and Logan Couture. We haven’t got to the blueline yet. San Jose has defenders that can approach Nashville calibre, with the best top duo in the ‘Enn’ with Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson.
San Jose has been rather wishy-washy so far in the regular season, but one has to believe that the Sharks are going to be there when the chips are down. The Fins have the second-best penalty kill unit in the league (almost an 88% clip) and when goalie Martin Jones is seeing pucks, San Jose is unquestionably deep and formidable. The Sharks must work on their consistency, though, as they’ve won just three of their last seven games.
NHL Betting Trends:

- NAS are 39-16 in their last 55 overall.
- SJ are 3-8 in their last 11 games following a win.
- Home team is 48-20 in the last 68 meetings.
Free Nashville Predators vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Prediction:
This one is, understandably, tough to call. The Preds have been steamrolling everybody, but San Jose ain’t your regular Joe Blow. Both of these franchises seem to be all-in on winning a Stanley Cup this season. That said, conserving your energy and health over a long season is a consideration, but games like this are a litmus test for elite teams.
If either of these teams want to actualize their designs of bringing Lord Stanley to their city, this is one of those statement games even midweek in November. Tune into this one if you can.
