We got our first taste of meaningful NHL hockey and 24 hours later we’re doing it again. Same time, same place and same teams.
The Predators were the team we thought they were, evenly balanced with a brick wall in the crease. Same thing for the Sharks, didn’t expect a whole lot and that’s what we’ve got in game 1 of the season.
Nashville Predators
The Predators came out swinging in the first period after Kiefer Sherwood scored just a minute into the game. He won a puck battle in the corner, got the puck to the point and went hard to the net before whacking in the rebound. It was his first game as a Predator and great way to make a debut.
Speaking of debuts, Ryan McDonagh assisted on the goal but more importantly he brought a steadying presence to the back-end. He led the team with 4 blocked shots while logging the most time, even-strength, on defence at 19:13.
They looked good in the first period with Juuse Saros making the necessary saves and then some. He would go on to stop 30 of 31 shots, finishing with a .968 save percentage on the day.
Nashville would score again in the first minute of the second and then newcomer Nino Niederreiter would add one later in the period. All told, the Preds scored 3 unanswered following the 1st period and 5 players would register 3 or more shots a piece.
San Jose Sharks
San Jose’s lone high spot was local boy Tomas Hertl making good and scoring in his home town of Prague. The place went absolutely bananas and it was a brief equalizer. But that would be it for the Sharks as Saros was solid at the other end and didn’t allow another against.
Timo Meier was also all over the ice, finishing the game with 5 shots on net. Hertl and Meier are expected to lead the team in scoring so it’s not that surprising that they led the offence in game 1.
Goaltender James Reimer made 28 saves on the night and did have a solid stop on a Ryan Johansen breakaway.
All told, the Sharks didn’t look like anything special and while they managed 31 shots on net, they were outplayed by a superior goaltender and a shutdown defence.
NHL Betting Trends:

Overview 4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 6.0
The first meeting between these two went down as everyone expected. Nashville covered the puck line and Saros was up to his old tricks, aka stonewalling everyone and everything. Now we should see a battle of the backups, with Kevin Lankinen in net for the Preds and Kaapo Kahkonen minding the opposing crease.
Lankinen went 8-15-6 with a 3.50 GAA and a .891 save percentage last season. He is definitely no Saros and while Kahkonen may be able to put up a fight, I don’t know that it will be enough. That being said, I feel that some of the Sharks forwards in front of him will be able to make more of a dent this time around. Set at 6.0, the over definitely seems feasible for this one.
