Both Nashville and Buffalo come into Thursday’s matchup on a 2-game winning streak. The Sabres are trying to keep at least within shouting distance of Boston in the Atlantic, although the Bruins have lost 3 straight.
The Predators are just trying to stay competitive and in the hunt for a Western Conference playoff berth where they are currently out of the wild card slot. Nonetheless, the Preds are a road favorite Thursday interestingly enough.
Oddsmakers are calling this close although Nashville at -125 on the road does peak some interest. The Predators have won two in a row – but they were supposed to vs. New Jersey (NAS -256) and San Jose (NAS -169).
Otherwise the Predators are having a very down year by their standards. Over the last 10 games Nashville has home losses to Winnipeg and Vancouver (-170 favorites in both), and was shut out 0-3 by Florida.
Nashville ranks #6 in the NHL in goals scored and takes the 4th most shots in the league. They have scored at least 3 goals in 7 of the last 10 but were in a couple of very low scoring games vs. the Sabres last season.
One of the reasons that Nashville isn’t nearer to the top of the Western Conference is because Pekka Rinne has had a down year. The Preds veteran has allowed at least 4 goals in 5 of his last 7 appearances. That bodes well not only for Buffalo as underdogs, but also to push the ‘over’ as well.
Why is Buffalo an underdog on Thursday, albeit slightly at +105. The Sabres too have won back-to-back games and against much better competition than Nashville has faced.
Buffalo’s last two games include a 5-2 win over defending Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis and an OT victory against 1st place Edmonton. Buffalo has cashed out at +155 and +113 respectively in their last two.
The Sabres are 4-1-2 in their last 6 and have gone 9-3-3 at home this season. Jack Eichel has also scored 18 points in the last 10 games and will be the best player on the ice on Thursday.
Are all of these trends making Buffalo look like TOO easy of a play here? Public betting consensus numbers were very scarce as of publishing but the Sabres look like far and away the pick in this game. Of course, that’s never good.
The Sabres may be going with Carter Hutton in lieu of Linus Ullmark in this one. Buffalo has a big game with the Islanders coming up Saturday and may look past the Western Conference Predators.
NHL Betting Trends:
