The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs open the 2026-27 NHL season Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena. It’s an Atlantic Division rivalry on Opening Night, so nobody needs much help finding the intensity button.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET.
Montreal enters the new season after finishing with 106 points in 2025-26, the best mark by a Canadian team. Toronto comes from the opposite direction after going 32-36-14, finishing last in the Atlantic and missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Nothing says welcome back to hockey quite like Canadiens-Leafs before anybody has time to behave themselves.

The offseason only added more intrigue. Toronto changed coaches, reshaped the front office, added Sergei Bobrovsky in goal and landed Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick.
That’s a fairly aggressive response to missing the playoffs.
Montreal brings considerably more continuity under Martin St. Louis. The Canadiens can lean on an established young core featuring Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky and Lane Hutson as they try to build on last season’s jump.

Montreal won three of four regular-season meetings against Toronto last season and finished 24 points ahead of the Leafs in the standings. That’s a significant gap, although Toronto hardly spent the summer pretending everything was fine.
The Leafs rebuilt aggressively, and this will be the first meaningful look at how quickly all those new pieces fit together under Jim Hiller.

Maple Leafs Stats
Toronto’s biggest question isn’t talent. It’s how quickly a dramatically different roster becomes a team.
Matthews, Nylander and Tavares still give Hiller proven scoring at the top of the lineup. Around them, the Leafs have added McKenna, Nick Paul, Jack Roslovic, Teddy Blueger, Colton Sissons and Brandon Duhaime.
McKenna is obviously the attraction.
The 18-year-old No. 1 overall pick jumps directly into the NHL after showing flashes during the shortened preseason. Toronto doesn’t need him to carry the offense immediately, which is a nice luxury when Matthews, Nylander and Tavares are already hanging around.
There are changes on the blue line too. Darren Raddysh and Emil Andrae join a group that still includes Morgan Rielly, Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Toronto needed the makeover after allowing 267 goals last season.
Canadiens Stats
Montreal doesn’t have nearly as many introductions to make. Suzuki, Caufield and Slafkovsky remain central pieces of an offense that took another step last season, while Hutson continues to give the Canadiens an elite puck-moving threat from the blue line.
Caufield remains the finisher opposing goalies have to locate every time Montreal establishes possession.
Montreal already knows what its young core can do; now the question is how much nastier the next step becomes.
The Canadiens also have Noah Dobson back on defense, giving St. Louis another puck-moving option alongside Hutson. Kaiden Guhle practiced Monday in a non-contact jersey as he continues working his way back.
Oliver Kapanen won’t play Tuesday because of a lower-body injury.
Montreal’s advantage is familiarity. While Toronto spent the summer changing the furniture, the Canadiens arrive with most of their important pieces already knowing where everybody is supposed to be.
Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs Goaltending Matchup
Toronto’s biggest offseason swing came in net, where Bobrovsky arrives after signing a three-year deal. The two-time Stanley Cup champion immediately gives the Leafs a proven No. 1 with considerably more postseason mileage than the club had a year ago.
There is a catch.
Bobrovsky is coming off a difficult final season in Florida, finishing 27-23-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average and .877 save percentage. Toronto is betting the 38-year-old has another rebound in him rather than another year of decline.
Anthony Stolarz gives the Leafs another experienced option behind him.
Montreal carries Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes on its Opening Night roster. St. Louis kept his starter to himself Monday, so there is no reason to pretend we know which one gets the crease before he says so.

Montreal has enough established chemistry to test Toronto’s rebuilt structure immediately. The Leafs counter with serious finishing talent, but there are enough new combinations here that defensive communication could take a little longer to look polished.
Opening Night isn’t always tidy hockey.
With Caufield and Suzuki attacking one way and Matthews, Nylander, Tavares and McKenna coming the other, there are plenty of players capable of turning one missed assignment into a red light.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs bottom line: Montreal brings the continuity and Toronto brings the renovation project, but both sides have enough high-end skill to make the first Canadiens-Leafs meeting of the new season considerably more entertaining than either coaching staff would probably prefer.

Here is my Canadiens Maple Leafs free pick: I’m taking Over 6.5. Opening Night gives us two talented offenses, plenty of new pieces on Toronto’s side and a rivalry that usually doesn’t need much encouragement to get interesting.
Montreal brings Caufield, Suzuki and Slafkovsky into another season together, with Hutson creating offense from the back end. Toronto can answer with Matthews, Nylander and Tavares, plus McKenna making his NHL debut.
There is too much offensive talent on this ice for me to start Opening Night cheering for blocked shots!
Bobrovsky gives Toronto a decorated veteran in net, but he’s coming off a season with an .877 save percentage. Montreal also enters without a publicly confirmed Game 1 starter, so I’m not building an Under case around either crease.
Opening Night can get a little loose, especially when one club has been rebuilt this extensively. Toronto has enough finishing talent to contribute heavily, while Montreal has more than enough skill to answer.
Take the Over 6.5 eh!
