The all Canadian conference play gets underway with a matchup between Montreal and Toronto on Wednesday night. The Canadiens broke a two year playoff drought last season, and even upset Pittsburgh in the qualifying round.
Toronto once again has high hopes behind the duo of Auston Matthews and Joe Tavares. It will also be interesting to see what 41 year old Joe Thornton has in the tank after signing a 1-year deal this offseason.
Montreal added some size and defense in the offseason, bringing in Joel Edmundson, who has also seen offensive improvement with the Blues and Hurricanes the last two seasons. 21-year-old Alexander Romanov also brings high upside on defense.
The Canadiens were also 19th in goals scored last season, so they’ve made some changes on the offensive end with the additions of Josh Anderson and Tyler Toffoli.
The Canadiens do lose their 3rd leading scorer from last season with Max Domi off to Columbus.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs will also try to ruin the season debut of Carey Price in goal. The Canadiens net minder led the NHL in games and minutes last season. Toronto’s offense posted the 3rd most goals last season.
Despite the prowess of Matthews (80 points), Tavares (60 points), and Mitch Marner (67 points), Price was actually 3-0 vs. Toronto last season with a .912 save percentage.
Frederik Andersen gets the nod in net for Toronto, coming off a 29-13-7 season. Andersen had a 2.85 GAA with a .909 save percentage.

One of the biggest things Toronto did this offseason was add veterans Thornton and Wayne Simmonds. The Leafs have always had the talent, but maybe not always the leadership.
