A classic Atlantic division battle over provincial lines occurs in Kanata on Thursday night, where the Habs and the Sens – both struggling for consistency of late – play the second leg of a home-and-home, where the Canadiens stomped Ottawa 5-2 in the first game. The much-maligned Sens will be looking to exact revenge in their barn this week.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal certainly shows spurts of speed, good goaltending and lighting the lamp. The problem is, you never know when it is all going to come together. Montreal sits fifth in the Atlantic, and last week they lost five consecutive games, including to minnows like the Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils. The Canadiens are supposed to have the best goalie in the world, but Carey Price isn’t always playing like it.

There’s no doubt: Montreal has some young, intriguing pieces that are thriving at the Bell Centre…Max Domi, Tomas Tatar, Jonathan Drouin and Artturi Lehkonen leap to mind. Yet, after those top forwards the depth isn’t great, and the lacklustre play of Price has been a letdown (9-8 record, GAA over three, save percentage under .900). That’s not cutting the mustard for a top-money guy. If Price gets his game in order and keeps it there, the Canadiens’ overall play should rise commensurately.

Ottawa Senators

Oh, the poor Sens. Not unlike Montreal, there are some young players to enjoy, but they can’t get a downtown stadium deal done, they were a laughingstock with the Erik Karlsson/Mike Hoffman beef and (sadly through no fault of their own) ‘Ubergate’, and most importantly, they have an asshat owner in Eugene Melnyk. Ottawa is such a strange franchise because despite to Stanley Cup final appearances in the recent past, you have to feel sorry for their fans. They are a bit like the Florida/Miami Marlins of hockey.

But the Senators do have Thomas Chabot, and damn that’s encouraging. He is really shaping up to be a beauty blueliner in the modern, speedy, puck-moving game. Ottawa is dwelling in the basement of the Atlantic division, so hopefully Chabot and Co. can get some retribution on their neighbours in La Belle Province.

I think this game will be much closer than the 5-2 mark of last game. Ottawa had one the three games previous to the Montreal slip-up, so I’ll call for the home team to get back on track and grind out a narrow victory in the cavernous Canadian Tire Centre – although the Kanata outpost does fill up better when Montreal or Toronto is in town.

Expect not just Chabot, but rookie phenom Brady Tkachuk to get involved on the scoresheet in this one.
