It wasn’t but 2-3 years ago that Minnesota had the best home ice advantage in the NHL. Times have changed though as the Wild have won just 6 of their last 26 in St. Paul.
For that reason, oddsmakers are calling Sunday night’s game between the Wild and visiting Montreal a close one. Minnesota is coming off their first win of the year – but it was against equally lowly Ottawa.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal is floating as they begin the 2019/20 NHL season. The Canadiens have gone 3-2-2 on the year and their 8 points are just 5 back from Buffalo in the Atlantic.
Claude Julien’s squad comes into Sunday’s game in St. Paul having just beaten Minnesota 4-0 in Montreal on Thursday with a line of MON -172. The Canadiens had won only 2 games in the 6 prior.
The key for Montreal on Sunday will be to continue to exploit the Minnesota defense. The Wild rank 30th in the league in goals against while the Canadiens boast a top 5 offense in shots on goal.

Minnesota has a lot of questions surrounding their goaltending situation, but Montreal is confident with Carey Price in net Sunday. Price stopped all of the whopping 17 shots he faced vs. Minnesota on Thursday.
Minnesota Wild
Even with their win over Ottawa, the Wild are officially the worst team in the NHL with just 2 points, one less than the Senators. Their slow start has Minnesota already 11 points back from red hot Colorado in the Central.
Minnesota looked totally exploited in their 0-4 loss at Montreal on Thursday. Minnesota managed 17 SOG in that game, not good for an offense that is 2nd to last in the NHL in scoring as it is.
If there’s any sort of advantage for Minnesota in this matchup it’s that they are at home for just the 2nd time this season. The Wild lost 4-7 for Pitt in their only home game so far this year.

Minnesota has done a lot of traveling so far on this young season. Maybe they aren’t as bad as they look, just victims of trying to find their early season legs and having to do so on the road in 6 of 7 games.
Minnesota will go with Devan Dubnyk again in net on Sunday as they’ve done just once in the last 3 games. Dubnyk has allowed 4 goals in 4 of 5 starts this season so don’t be surprised to see Alex Stalock who shut out Ottawa.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Canadiens are 6-2 last 8 as a road favorite
- Canadiens are 3-8 last 11 road games
- Wild are 5-16 last 21 overall
- Wild are 6-20 last 26 home games
Free Minnesota Wild vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL Prediction:
It’s hard to not like Montreal in this one, even while on the road. Minnesota fans are getting very antsy and despite this being just the 2nd game of the year in St. Paul, the home team could be turned against by the crowd very early.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Canadiens -129
Bad defense and no offense isn’t a great combo for the Wild.
