Columbus is tied with Anaheim for the fewest points in the NHL (11) but there are some signs that the Blue Jackets might be coming out of their rut. After dropping five in a row Columbus has picked up points in three straight (2-0-1).
The weird thing about Thursday’s Canadiens vs Columbus game at Nationwide Arena is that it’s one that both teams think they should win. The Blue Jackets have played better recently, but Montreal has also won three of their last four.
Oddsmakers agree that this one could go either way, with Montreal at -115 being their first time as a favorite since October 20th against Arizona. Columbus at -105 is just their second time at minus money in the last seven games.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal had been putting up some nice offensive numbers prior to their 5-1 loss to New Jersey on Tuesday night. The Devils are 13-3 on the year and the Canadiens were a +158 underdog even at home so that loss can be taken with a grain of salt.
The Canadiens had won three straight prior to the loss to New Jersey and while scoring 13 goals in the process. They were big underdog victories too, 3-2 at Detroit (+145), 5-2 vs Vancouver (+145), and 5-4 vs Pittsburgh (+146).
Despite some recent offensive success, it’s still been a down year at that end of the ice for Montreal. They are just 21st in the NHL in scoring, 24th in SOG, and 29th in power play conversion.
The good news for Montreal is that they are up against one of the worst defenses in the league on Thursday night. The Blue Jackets have allowed 4+ goals in six of their last seven games and rank last in the NHL in goals against (4.3).
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus has a couple home wins over Philadelphia over the past week and also picked up a point in the 4-3 OT loss at the Islanders as a +204 underdog. After losing 9 of their first 12 this season, maybe there’s a light for the Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets have also scored 13 goals their past three games, and have a nice matchup against Montreal’s Jake Allen in net on Thursday. Allen has allowed 8 goals his last two starts and 4+ in four of his last six.
The problem with Columbus possibly being able to score a lot in this matchup is that Montreal should light the lamp a few times themselves. Blue Jackets goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is filling in for the injured Elvis Merzlikins and has allowed 13 goals in four appearances this month.
