A rematch of the 1986 and 1989 Stanley Cup finals goes Thursday night in Calgary.
The Habs come into this one looking to create some space between them and the Senators for first in the Atlantic, while the Flames are heading down the stretch in a tight race with Anaheim and Edmonton for the final two Pacific division playoff spots.
Each team is surging coming into this one. The Habs are on a 6 game winning streak, but the Flames are doing 1 better, having won their last 7.
It’s been a strange last few seasons for the Habs. In the two seasons which spanned 2013 to 2015 the Habs looked like Stanley Cup contenders, winning 3 playoff series in that period.
A Carey Price injury and a down season resulted in them missing the playoffs last year however, but then they seemed to rise back to the level of their expected play early this year.
Then a mid-season fall of form looked as though it might cause the Habs to lose top spot in the division to Ottawa. As a result a coaching change was made. On February 14th the club fired head coach Michel Therrien and replaced him with Claude Julien, who had just been fired by Boston.
After dropping the first 3 games under Julien’s coaching the Habs have now won 6 straight and are looking to build a buffer between them and the Sens. After visiting Calgary the Habs will head to Edmonton. After that however, they will play 7 of 8 at home to close out the month.
The streaking Calgary Flames will come into this one on a 7 game winning streak. Just like that the Flames seem to have created enough breathing room in the playoff race to relax, but the opportunity to break into the Pacific division 2 or 3 spot is now in striking distance.
The Flames are just two points back of both Anaheim and Edmonton, with each team having played 66 games at this point. The possibility of a battle of Alberta in the first round of the playoffs is too good to ignore. It was 1991 the last time the Oilers and Flames met in the postseason.
Calgary has missed the playoffs 6 of the last 7 years. In 2015 they did manage to win their first playoff series since their memorable run to the cup finals in 2004 however.
Considering the rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton, you know the Flames would love to get out of the wildcard and into a divisional series.
The Flames have gotten scoring from Mikael Backlund (20 goals) and 22-year-old Sean Monahan (21 goals) this season. In net Chad Johnson and Brian Elliott have both been decent as they’ve shared goaltending duties.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Canadiens are 2-7 in last 9 in Calgary
- Over is 23-10-2 in Calgary last 35 vs Atlantic
- Under is 7-3-1 in Calgary last 11 overall
- Canadiens are 11-5 in their last 16 Thursday games
Free Montreal Canadiens vs. Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction:
This will be a tight one, which are exactly the type of games that Calgary has figured out how to win. Carey Price will be strong, Max Pacioretty will light the lamp, but I feel Calgary is going to find a way to win, just like they have done the past 7 games.
