The NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens start their swing through California on Tuesday night with a date with the Anaheim Ducks.
A trip that is usually a murderer’s row for Eastern Conference teams should be a great measuring stick for the Habs.
Underwhelming is a good word to describe the start to the 2016-17 season for the Anaheim Ducks. A perennial Pacific Division powerhouse has been fairly ordinary thus far and sit fourth in their division and clinging to a slim lead in the wild card standings.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf was critical of his own play and that of his longtime linemate Corey Perry.
The two have both managed 18 points thus far which is a respectable total, but Getzlaf’s two goals and Perry’s four are hardly the numbers you’d expect from one of the better duos in the NHL.
In recent history (the past two years) the Ducks have been able to use their significant size and physical edge to overwhelm the Canadiens and wear them down.
The Ducks have won three of four meetings between the two in the past two seasons, and both games at the Duck Pond in Anaheim.
Montreal got the better of the Ducks late in March last season with a 4-3 win in Montreal.
The team that lit the NHL on fire during the first month of the season has cooled off slightly, though they still own a comfortable five point lead in the Atlantic Division and a three point lead over the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference.
That is in large part due to an incredible start, but the Habs have come back to earth a bit lately, going 6-3-1 in their last 10 with three consecutive losses mixed in there and a four loss in five game stretch.
The team has righted the ship with back to back 2-1 victories, as they’ve got back to playing
boring lockdown hockey and letting Carey Price do his job.
In their recent skid where they dropped four games in five, the team gave up 14 goals in their four losses.
This isn’t a team that can rely heavily on outgunning teams, as apart from the Alex’s (Galchenyuk and Radulov) the scoring punch is a little thin.
In what should be a grind it out game against the Ducks, this should suit the Habs as they’re built to win the 2-1 games that come down to the wire.

Free Montreal Candiens vs. Anaheim Ducks NHL Hockey Prediction:
History suggest this is the Ducks’ game to win, but let’s remember that the Habs were without Carey Price for last year’s loss to the Ducks.
The Habs now have a big physical force on the back end in Shea Weber who can keep Getzlaf and Perry in check and that’s the biggest difference in this matchup from years past.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Montreal – 102
This game has the makings of another 2-1 scoreline. Checking recent scores, the Habs’ last three wins have come by scores of, you guessed it, 2-1. I like the Habs to start this road trip on the right foot with a win.
