The visiting Wild has continued their hot start to the season, while the Blues are still trying to figure things out, although it seems like they’re turning it around of late. It should be a classic, marquee Central division match-up on Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota Wild
It’s never sexy, but Minnesota just seems to find a way to get it done. Not unlike the ‘Fargo’ movie and corresponding TV series, a brave Midwestern work ethic is at the heart of this team from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. (It says a lot that the seminal pop culture about the state of Minnesota features a title of a city from North Dakota, right?)

Sometimes it’s savvy veteran Eric Staal, sometimes it’s flashier forward Jason Zucker and often it’s a pair of crafty Finns in Mikael Granlund and Mikko Koivu, but whatever the formula is, it translates to wins. Gregarious coach Bruce Boudreau – he who ain’t afraid of a few cuss words – seems like a weird fit to the team ethos, but maybe he keeps the room light. Overall, the home team Blues should have their hands full on Sunday.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues have outscored their opponents 8-1 in the past two games (4-0 over the Sharks and 4-1 over the Carolina Hurricanes) so it seems like the early-season malaise is working its way out. Having veteran, top-billed defenceman Alex Pietrangelo work his way out of a slump has made a big difference in St. Louis’ fortunes. Off-season acquisition Ryan O’Reilly also bagged a hat trick versus Carolina; he’s leading the team now, with eight goals.

The goaltending hasn’t been perfect, but backup Chad Johnson has played well the past couple of games. The Blues have the talent to be an easy playoff team, so they have to congeal all of their elements and a home game against the rival Wild might be another great opportunity to do that.

Free Minnesota Wild vs. St. Louis Blues NHL Prediction:
Bettors and experts always must count the Wild out at their peril, but I like what St. Louis is showcasing lately, and the change in form may just be enough to save coach Mike Yeo’s job. This should be a close one, but I like the home side in this daytime clash.
