Periodically with the powerful, there needs to be a sacrifical lamb to placate the hordes (hockey fans, in this case) braying for blood. Unfortunately, that role is played by the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, when they travel to Nashville to play the Western Conference-leading Predators.
Los Angeles Kings
Well, there hasn’t been a lot of monarchical behavior in Tinseltown so far. That’s a polite way to put it. Really, the Kings stink. Today’s NHL is one unquestionably built around foot speed, and the Kings just don’t have it. A recent trade that sent Tanner Pearson to Pittsburgh in exchange for Carl Hagelin was an effort to get some quickness in the lineup, but L.A. still looks like a team that can get gassed every night.

The Kings had a great mini-dynasty going in the first half of this decade (two recent Stanley Cup banners are flying in the Staples Center rafters) but all good things must come to an end. With their 11 points in the cellar of the Western Conference, it certainly appears as if the Kings have abdicated their throne. I have to stop watching ‘The Crown’ – too many royal references.
Nashville Predators
The Preds are on the absolute opposite end of the spectrum. Although they’ve played a bit crappy most recently, they are good. Like, really good. A team of this pedigree, after a few deflating losses, desperately looks to right the ship, so a three-game slump doesn’t become six.

There’s plenty to like in Nashy (and I’m just talking hockey). Good scoring with Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen, a prodigiously deep blueline with some character courtesy Don-Cherry-in-waiting candidate P.K. Subban, and a savvy veteran netminder with Pekka Rinne. Nashville head coach Peter Laviolette can roll three lines and feel confident he can get scoring from anywhere.
The Predators should be well-torqued to show a raucous weekend crowd just how good they are.

Free Los Angeles Kings vs. Nashville Predators NHL Prediction:
After a narrow loss to the Ducks, a painful loss to the contending Sharks and a recent drop to the youthful Coyotes, the Preds are definitely going to be looking to right some wrongs.

The Kings make a trip into Music City at their peril. Hey, at least there’s lots of bars in which the Kings’ players and staff can drown their sorrows.
It’ll be a Nashville win, and it won’t be close.
