The Los Angeles Kings are coming off a tough 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres and now head to Joe Louis Arena to take on the Red Wings.
Detroit has lost three straight and five of its last seven. With just two goals in those last three losses, the Red Wings can’t seem to generate any offense and will have to find some way to score in order to have any shot at competing with the Kings.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings had won five straight to finish the month of November, but are just 2-3-1 since December began.
Center Jeff Carter continues to be the best offensive player on this team. He scored twice in the loss to the Sabres and has 14 goals to go along with 10 assists on the year.
The Kings have had a good defensive season, with a couple of exceptions. The team ranks 10th in goals against (76) and has held teams to two goals or less in 14 games this season.
Letting in six goals against the Sabres is not the usual for this team and the Kings will look to bounce back defensively against a struggling Detroit team.
Goaltender Peter Budaj has done a great job filling in for starter Jonathan Quick, who is sidelined with a groin injury and probably won’t see the ice until at least mid-January. Budaj is 13-7-2 with a 2.27 goals against average.
The Kings should be well-rested against Detroit, in just its second game of a long, tough nine-game road trip.
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit has a long, long list of injuries which has hampered its final season in historic Joe Louis Arena. With Justin Abdelkader, Tyler Bertuzzi, Johan Franzen, Joe Vitale, and multiple others on the IR, it has been tough for the Red Wings to find much success this year.
The Red Wings are a paltry 6-8-3 at home this year and the injuries are a major reason why. On the defensive end, the team isn’t bad. It ranks 12th in the NHL in goals against, but cannot find a way to score. With two goals total in its last three games, and just one goal or less in five of the last six, the Red Wings are extremely poor offensively.
20-year-old Dylan Larkin is the top goal scorer on the team. With nine goals along with two assists, he has been one of the few to put the puck in the back of the net.
Detroit won’t be able to do anything against a decent Kings team if it can’t score. This could be a very low scoring game, but it won’t go the Red Wings’ way if someone doesn’t get the puck past Peter Budaj.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The OVER is 3-1-1 in Los Angeles’ last five games
- Detroit is 3-9 in one-goal games
