The Ducks have now taken over the lead of the Pacific Division, surpassing the Edmonton Oilers team that show out of the gates before falling back into second.
The Oilers now have 19 points, which is tied with the Los Angeles Kings, who will travel down the highway in Cali to face off against the Ducks in this divisional clash.
The Kings haven’t yet been fired on all cylinders, but have made a nice run up the standings in the weak Pacific.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings haven’t received their regular production from their star player, Anze Kopitar, who has registered just eight points in 15 games played.
Kopitar has led the Ducks in scoring each season for nearly a century, as the last Kings player not named Kopitar to lead LA in scoring was Mike Cammalleri in 2006-07.
Jeff Carter, their other biggest offensive star, leads the team in scoring with six goals and 13 points in his 18 games. Carter shows tremendous chemistry with Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson a season ago, and LA will look for the trio to reconnect the magic to pace the offense while
Kopitar tries to find his offensive game.
If you were to hear that a Kings’ defenseman was situated in 3rd place in team scoring and leading the squad with 8 assists, you’d likely think it’d be the reigning Norris trophy winner, Drew Doughty.
But alas, that title belongs to Alec Martinez, at least so far through the first 1/5th of the season.
The Kings lost a key piece to their roster in the first game of the season, with Jonathan Quick going down to injury for a lengthy few months.
Quick has been spelled by Jeff Zatkoff, Jack Campbell and Peter Budaj, the latter who is now shouldering the bulk of the duties.
Budaj has a .914 SV% on the season with a 2.12 GAA and an 8-6-1 record.
Anaheim has shot up into first place in the Pacific Division, and it may be no surprise that the team has been on a tear since young pivot, Rickard Rakell, has returned to the lineup.
Rakell was a pending RFA hold out who was finally signed after nine games into the year, and in his nine games played thus far he has registered a point per game, which includes five goals.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf paces the Ducks yet again on the score sheet with 15 points, tied for the team lead with linemate Corey Perry.
Winger Jakob Silfverberg has performed well alongside the duo in the top-6 group, with 6g+6a for 12 points.
It’s another Ryan, Ryan Kessler, who leads the team in goals with eight and sits one point behind Getzlaf and Perry in points, with 14.
John Gibson, in his first full season as the lead man in the crease for the Ducks has performed admirably.
In his 14 games, Gibson owns a 6-5-3 record with a .909 SV% and a 2.55 GAA.
The only issue for Gibson is that new back-up, Jonathan Bernier, owns a better .933 SV% and 2.06 GAA in his seven appearances, steaking a claim for some more time of his own between the pipes.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Anaheim is 6-2-0 on home ice this season.
- The Kings have been the streakiest team in the NHL this season, having complied six different wining or losing streaks already .
Free Los Angeles Kings vs Anaheim Ducks NHL Hockey Prediction
Anaheim holds the edge as the better all-around team at this point in the season, but especially on the offensive side of the game.
Three different Ducks’ players have higher point totals than LA’s leading scorer, Jeff Carter, which also isn’t factoring Rickard Rakell’s point per game pace but in fewer games played.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Ducks Moneyline
I know LA has been better of late and that Peter Budaj has done a solid job in net while filling in for the injured Quick, but Anaheim just has too many horses to hold down and Drew Doughty can’t play 40 mins per game.
Seems like the two generally play each other tough in the California rivalry, but I think Anaheim adds to their solid home record.
