Just as the hotter than hot New York Islanders finally start to cool, the Vegas Golden Knights have found their mojo, and will be heading to Long Island Thursday to see if this streak is for real.
So far, a trip to the East Coast seems to have been just the thing Golden Knights needed to get their season on track.
But why have the The New York Islanders cooled off? For the past six-weeks they were the hottest team in hockey, winning 15 of 16 as part of a franchise-record 17-game point streak.
They’re definitely a strong road team having played seven of their last nine on the road and this will be their first return to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum since Nov. 13

Las Vegas Golden Knights
What happened in Vegas? Well it didn’t stay in Vegas, as they lost on the road and at home. Most of that could be attributed to goalie, Marc-Andre Fluery being distracted by and then taking a personal leave due to the death of his father.
That led to a seven losses in nine game tailspin until backup, Malcolm Subban finally found his footing and rattled off four straight victories.
Now the surging Knights will be hoping to complete a perfect three-game road trip against the Islanders.
But how good are the Knights, have they truly put the early season losses behind them? Are they back in playoff form?
Let’s consider that in their last game against New Jersey, the Golden Knights were outshot 17-7 in the first period. They fell behind twice in the first 40 minutes against the Devils, a team that had just fired their head coach to try and reignite their season.
They got the win, but it wasn’t exactly a steamroller.

New York Islanders
The islanders benefit from great goaltending. So blessed are they in the position they are the first team to alternate starting netminders since San Jose took the same strategy in 2006-07.
If the alternating continues, then it’s Semyon Varlamov turn to get the nod versus Vegas after Thomas Greiss faced Montreal. As noted, both are solid, and gives the Islanders the huge advantage of the opposing team often facing an unknown goalie.
However, New York is not the strongest home team. Like their goalies, they alternate between the Coliseum and the newer Barclay’s Center, where they have the better record.
Free Las Vegas Golden Knights vs. New York Islanders NHL Prediction:
Vegas still isn’t quite there. They have a question mark at goal, and the offense continues to be hit and miss.
The Islanders may have cooled a bit, but you don’t win as many games as they have in the NHL by luck.
