I have quoted Lowetide from The Athletic many times this year and this morning he wrote about how “at some point Ken needs to pull trigger on an established defenceman”.
The moves the team are making currently indicate they are being patient and looking for answers internally first. Although I understand the thought process there, and it’s not like Ken has never brought outsiders in to tweak this team, but the time is absolutely now to bring a defenceman in who can play shut down hockey.
They shuffled the deck again at practice today to give the Knights a different look Saturday as the Kings stymied them offensively in their previous outing. They held Draisaitl and McDavid to just one shot a piece.
But this team should be permitted to have off nights offensively and win close games. Unfortunately that isn’t the case due to piss poor defending as you already know.
Which brings me to the waiting game Holland seems to be playing with Broberg. I am not sure that he is sensing the impending, urgent emergency of making sure this team competes for a cup this season.
We’re 9-8 and teams like the Kraken and LA kings are going to surpass us in the Pacific which is unacceptable.
So heading into this game against the Knights, I will say flat out, I don’t love their chances. The Knights are just a more talented version of the LA Kings with perhaps a little less toughness.

Las Vegas Golden Knights
The Knights right now look like the best version of themselves since they came into the league. Everyone has kind of forgotten about how they gave up Pacioretty for nothing due to cap issues.
The Knights are 4th in the NHL in goals per game and 8th in shooting percentage. They’re also terrific defensively but what is most surprising and pleasantly so for Knights fans is that Logan Thompson is red hot in net to start this season.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers have a bunch of flaws and I have harped on most of them so I’ll discuss an issue I haven’t yet this year and it has been a problem throughout.
The Oilers have the third best shooting percentage in the NHL right now, and are 6th in the league in goals for per game. The flaw here is that they do not take a ton of shots particularly in the early going in games.
In the last game of their recent road trip against Florida the shots were incredibly lopsided in the 1st period, and then again against LA the shots at one point in the 1st period were 12-2.
Zach Hyman said in his post game interview that “the shot clock can be deceiving” which is true sometimes, but in the case of Edmonton it’s a tell tale sign of struggle due to it being a problem nearly every game.
Jay Woodcroft has said it’s been a point of emphasis at their practices to get better starts from their group. So far whatever they’re up too on the practice sheet has not come to fruition come game time.
