Cup in six.
That was the statement made by Golden Knights owner Bill Foley prior to franchise’s first season.
Fast forward six years and the Cup will be in the house for Game 5 in Vegas, where the Golden Knights will have an opportunity to win hockey’s holy grail for the first time in their franchise’s young history.
On the other end of the ice will be the Florida Panthers who’s quest for the Cup could come to a close if they fail to find a win Tuesday night.
After going down 3-0 by the midway point of the second period, the Cats did claw back to bring the score to within a single goal of tying up the series but it wasn’t meant to be.
Now, down 3-1, you’d have to believe they are in desperation mode. Any mistake could mean the end to their season but it doesn’t mean they have to panic. They’ve been down this road before, just a month and a half ago in the first round against Boston.
It’s familiar territory for the Panthers.
The question is though, do they have anything left in the tank to pull off the comeback once again?
Florida Panthers
There is no denying that the Panthers have struggled to score in this series with just nine goals in the previous four games.
But then again, they didn’t light up the Hurricanes in the Third Round, scoring just 10 goals on the way to a four game sweep.
It was the clutch play of Matthew Tkachuk and the efforts of Sergei Bobrovsky who will them to succeed. Unfortunately, the Finals are an entity that needs more than what the Panthers have already given.
Offense
The Panthers offense is now averaging just 2.95 goals scored per game in these playoffs and have a power play that ranks 9th among all postseason participants this year with a 21.4% success rate.
While I still believe that Tkachuk will be in the lineup for the do-or-die Game 5, he is clearly injured. The forward skipped practice on Monday but did travel with the team to Vegas. He barely participated in the warmups during Game 4, while missing several shifts in the third and didn’t throw a single hit in the loss. Ever since he took a notably hard hit from Vegas’s Keegan Kolesar in Game 3, Tkachuk has been nursing a suspected arm injury of sorts.
The Panthers forward still leads the team in goals, assists and points while working with a three-way tie for the league lead thanks to his 24 points.

Defense
On the back end, they have the sixth-best defense after averaging 3.00 goals against during the postseason. Their penalty kill ranks 7th after showing a 70.0% kill rate when short a man.
Brandon Montour found the back of the net for the second time in two games but both he and Radko Gudas did miss Monday’s team skate.
Goaltending
Sergei Bobrovsky’s previous brilliance that we saw in the latter half of the first round and up until the Finals has been miss through the past four games. The netminder has allowed 13 goals on 104 shots and has posted a3.74 goals against average to go with a soft .875 save percentage through the past four games.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights’ depth has proved to be their best quality during this Cup run. Yes, they have seen solid performances from top stars such as Jack Eichel but it’s the play of the original Vegas misfits that has kept them in the hunt for hockey’s greatest prize.
Golden Knights OGs Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson and William Karlsson have shown up big time for Vegas.
Now back on home ice, where they dominated the Panthers by a score of 12-4 through the first two games of the series, the scale tips back in their favour for Game 5. Vegas has gone 20-6 through their last 26 home games.
Offense
With a second-best offense that boasts and average of 3.76 goals scored per game, the Golden Knights have seen an improvement on the power play which ranks 8th at 22.2%.
Marchessault leads the team in both goals and points while also in a for the lead league in both of those offensive categories. He leads the odds to win the Conn Smythe at -600.
Defense
In their own end, they are tied for the third-best defense in the league after averaging just 2.57 goals per game during this run. On the penalty kill, they sit at 13th with a 71.2% success rate.
Goaltending
From a journeyman career back-up to possibly backstopping his team to the Stanley Cup, Adin Hill has been absolutely phenomenal this postseason.
He has a 10-4 record to go with his 2.11 goals against average and a .934 save percentage.
