It’s do or die once again for the Maple Leafs with their season on the verge of extinction.
A concerning factor is that they’ve won just a single game on home ice in these playoffs which came in Game 2 of the first round.
Florida on the other hand has been playing some great hockey recently and that’s without major contributions from Matthew Tkachuk and Brandon Montour.
Toronto will have to keep them quiet as they attempt to survive the other weapons in the Panthers’ arsenal if they have hope for a Game 6.
Florida Panthers
The Panthers are looking to put the final nail in the coffin that holds Toronto’s season. Florida looked promising late in the third period as they attempted to tie the game and finished the period with 13 shots on net in the third.
They are 7-4 overall and 5-1 on the road this postseason after securing three road wins in Boston during the first round.
Offense
The offense has been less potent in this round compared to their series with Boston. They’ve scored just 11 times in their series with Toronto after putting up 15 in their last three games against the Bruins.
They’re averaging 3.36 goals scored per game these playoffs with a power play that is clicking at 25.9%.
Matthew Tkachuk leads the team with 11 assists and 16 points while boasting a team-high +9.
It’s worth noting that Brandon Montour is tied for the team lead with 6 goals in the playoffs but has only put up a single point in the second round. If he can find his offensive touch once again in this game, Toronto is in for a rough night.

Defense
The Panthers’ defense has definitely tightened up against Toronto. While they’ve posted a 3.11 goals against average, they haven’t allowed more than 2 goals against this round. Their penalty kill has been more consistent this round as they’ve put up a 77.8% marker when down a man in the round 2. Florida has held Toronto to 25 shots or fewer in each of their last two games.
Goaltending
It’s been vintage Sergei Bobrovsky in these playoffs after posting a 6-2 record through 9 appearances with a 3.00 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. He’s allowed just two goals against in each game versus Toronto and leads the league with a .934 save percentage in round two.
Toronto Maple Leafs
It’s desperation time for the Maple Leafs as a loss means their season is done. They’re 5-5 through these playoffs and have struggled at Toronto with the fewest home wins among the remaining teams. At Scotiabank Arena, they’re allowing 4.00 goals against per game this postseason.
While Mitch Marner was definitely a factor in the Game 4 win, they’re going to need the rest of the “Big Four” to show up if they have any hope of pushing the series past Game 5.
Offense
Up front, they’re averaging just 3.10 goals per game overall but that marker drops to 2.00 in the current round. Their power play is operating at a 26.7 success rate but are 2-for-9 in round 2.
Notably silent has been the play of Auston Matthews and Captain John Tavares who combined for 76 goals this season, but have just two assists in this series.
They’ll be without Matthew Knies who remains out with a concussion after being manhandled by Sam Bennett in Game 2.
Defense
The Maple Leafs haven’t been terrible defensively this round, boasting the second best goals against average in the second round at 2.75. The problem though is that Florida has been better, with their 2.00 goals against average in round two.
Overall Toronto has a 3.20 goals against average in these playoffs with a 75.0% kill rate when down a man or more.
Goaltending
With Ilya Samsonov currently out of commission, it’s up to Joseph Woll to keep Toronto’s season alive.
Woll was solid in his first playoff start, stopping 24 of 25 shots while allowing just a single goal against late in the third.

Free Florida Panthers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Prediction
Much has been made about Toronto’s “Big Four” not stepping up on the scoresheet in this round but that could also be attributed to the stellar play of Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky. He’s brought the vintage Bobrovsky out of the closet that has helped him claim two Vezina nods over his career.
Even if the Leafs’ “Big Four” wake up, I don’t see an onslaught coming in this contest. Each side has seen their gameplay tighten up after both sides allowed fewer than 30 shots in each of the last two games.
The under has been favourable through the first four games of this series and that trend should continue in Game 5.
