Whether it be the raucous crowd or calls going their way, home ice has always tilted in favour of the Bruins. That view is even more so magnified in the playoffs. In fact, they haven’t lost a postseason game at TD Garden since Game 5 against the New York Islanders in the second-round of the 2021 playoffs.
The Panthers enter TD Garden once again with hopes of evening the series up prior to heading back to the Sunshine State. It’s a tall task as the Bruins were an incredible 34-4-3 on home ice during the regular season and have carried their 4-game win streak at TD Garden into the first game of the playoffs.
Florida Panthers
The Panthers got off to a slow start which absolutely killed them. Head Coach Paul Maurice wanted to keep the Bruins off the scoresheet and the crowd out of the game through the first 10 minutes. That went out the window in just under six minutes into the game as David Pastrnak put Boston up 1-0.
Despite the loss, the Panthers played well overall and weren’t run out of the building after outhitting the Bruins 44-43 on the night. They will need to be better on the power play which went 0-for-2 while using two defensemen on the blue line. It’s a tad bit surprising when you have a 40-plus goal scorer in Carter Verhaeghe being minimally used on the second unit.
Offense
The offense put up 32 shots on net but were only able to solve Linus Ullmark once. Matthew Tkachuk scored the lone goal for the Panthers on a miscue by Dmitry Orlov who was trying to corral a dump-in on his back hand.

Defense
The defense for the Panthers has looked slim for most of the year and the Bruins took advantage of that in this one. They saw Boston get to the net on a few chances, including the third goal goal from Jake DeBrusk. They’ll need to be a bit more steady in tight and continue to lay the body.
Goaltending
Alex Lyon played well in his first NHL playoff game, stopping 26 shots and making a number of remarkable pad saves to rob the Bruins of a sure thing. If not for Lyon’s ability to go from side to
That being said, Brad Marchand managed to sneak one past Lyon that bounce of the netminder’s glove in the second period. It’s unknown who will officially start the second game but Paul Maurice was complementary of Lyon’s play and there’s also the fact that Sergei Bobrovsky hasn’t played since March 27th.
Boston Bruins
As previously mentioned, the Bruins have won five straight at home and are on a nine-game win streak dating back to March 30th.
Their fast start got the home crowd involved off the hop and they were buzzing from the get go. The buy-in from the club is evident with 20 blocked shots and an effective power play that went 1-for-2 on the night.
The depth of the Bruins showed showed once again as they improved to 5-0-0 this year with Patrice Bergeron out of the lineup. However, while he wasn’t confirmed to play, the Captain did practice Tuesday and is feeling better.
Offense
After putting up a respectable 29 shots on net, the team would like to see that number eclipse 30 after averaging 33.0 during the regular season.
They went over 50.0% in the faceoff dot without their number one center in Bergeron with Pavel Zacha going 10-for-17 in the circle.
Tyler Bertuzzi fared quite well in his playoff debut, taking the second star after coming away with two assists. That’s not the only thing he took. At one point, he literally took the stick out of Nick Cousins hands before breaking it on the Bruins bench.
Defense
Defensively things could have been tighter for the Bruins as they gave away the puck 12 times and a handful were near their own net.
However, the penalty kill was perfect all night and didn’t allow a single shot from the Panthers’ power play.
Goaltending
The illness that had Linus Ullmark feeling under the weather coming into Game 1 didn’t seem to have a hold on the Vezina favourite. He made several key saves and bailed out his teammates multiple times, including a key save on a Verhaeghe breakaway.
Ullmark stopped 31 shots and took home the first star of the game.

Free Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins NHL Prediction
The play of each of the goaltenders impressed me quite a bit. Ullmark’s output was expected but the play of Alex Lyon had to have surprised more onlookers than just me.
I see this game being another tight and heavy hitting affair that misses the over.
