Coming off a historic President’s Trophy winning season last year, many though the Panthers would be a powerhouse in the East. That didn’t turn out to be the case as the Cats squeaked into the postseason by just a single point to clinch the final Wild Card spot in the conference.
Speaking of historic, the Bruins 2022-23 regular season broke plenty of records for the greatest run prior to the playoffs. The two that standout the most though are the new records they set for the most wins (65) and the most points (135) in a single regular season. They are the favourites to go all the way this year.
These two squads split the season series at two game a piece with the home team coming away with the victory each time.
Florida Panthers
Florida’s 42 wins and 92 points are down from last year’s 58 and 122 points but they’ve qualified for the postseason for the fourth straight year. The last time these two clubs met in the playoffs was during the Panthers’ 1996 run to the finals where they bested the Bruins in five games.
Due to where they finished in the standings, the Panthers won’t have home-ice advantage in the playoffs and finished the regular season with an away record of 19-19-3 this year.
They also ended the regular season on a bit of a sour note, dropping their last two games at home, but the slate is wiped clean heading into the playoffs where anything can happen.
Offense
With a 6th ranked offense that averaged 3.51 goals scored per game, the Panthers have plenty of fire power to work with. Their power play finished the 82-game marathon at 10th best with a 22.8% success rate.
They have quite a large arsenal of weapons as well with a 100+ point scorer, two 40-plus goals scorers, 12 players with double-digits in goals and a 73-point blueliner.
Matthew Tkachuk is their best offensive weapon overall with 40 goals and 109 points this season but you’ve got to hand it to Carter Verhaeghe who exploded for a team-high 42 tucks on the year.

Defense
Now this is a big old weak spot for the Panthers.
They enter the postseason with a 21st ranked offense that averages 3.32 goals against and a penalty kill that slides in at 23 with a 76.0% kill rate.
Goaltending
Another sore spot for the Cats.
They spent $10 million dollars on an unreliable starter and are currently riding their third-stringer into the postseason.
Alex Lyon has started eight straight games and is 6-2 during that stretch. He has a 9-4-2 record with a 2.89 goals against average and a .914 save percentage this year.
Can the Panthers count on him this postseason? We’ll have to wait and see.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins finished the season with just 17 losses and only 12 in regulation. At home, they produced an incredible 34-4-3 record at TD Garden this year and the ice always seems to be tilted in their favour when in Boston.
They’re riding an eight-game win streak with just a single loss in their last 15 outings.
That being said, all the records and regular season accolades won’t mean much for the Bruins if they can’t finish the story. They’ve been to the finals twice in the last ten years and have fallen short of the mark. Yes, that’s two months away but if they don’t get off to a good start with a win on home ice who knows if they can go the distance.
Offense
They enter this contest with the second-best offense in the league and averaging 3.67 goals score per game. On the power play, they posted a respectable 2.22% success rate that slots them in at 12th in the league.
David Pastrnak leads the team in goals (61), assists (52), and points (113) on the year.
Defense
The B’s were far and away the stingiest team in the league this year. They averaged a league-best 2.12 goals against and sport a penalty kill that is tops in the NHL at 87.3%.
Three Bruins defenseman in Hampus Lindholm (+49), Matt Grzelcyk (+46) and Brandon Carlo (+44) finished 1-2-3 in the league in terms of plus/minus rating.
Goaltending
Boston’s Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman came away with the Jennings Trophy for the least amount of goals against. This two-headed monster became the first tandem to finish with both a 40-win and 20-win season.
Ullmark took home the goalie triple crown, finishing at the top of the league in all three major categories with a 40-6-1 record and a 1.89 GAA to go with his .938 save percentage.
Swayman went 24-6-4 after posting a 2.27 GAA and a .920 save percentage.

Free Florida Panthers vs. Boston Bruins NHL Prediction
While I expect the Bruins to come away with the win, I don’t expect Florida to go down without a fight.
Ten of Boston’s last 16 games were close contests, finishing as one goal decisions. Not to mention, all four of their games against Florida this season hit the over.
I know usually playoff games are a lot tighter but with this being the first game of each team’s postseason, I’m betting they come out swinging.
