The Scotia North division play offs get underway Wednesday night with game one between the Jets and the Oilers, let’s break down this first round match up!
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are the heavily favoured team going into this match up. The team is led by captain Connor McDavid, who has put up a ridiculous 105 points in 56 regular season games, and is a shoe in for the Hart Trophy. As a team, the Oilers are 7-3 in their last 10 games, so they are entering the playoffs in full stride.
The Oilers have an even more impressive regular season record against their first round opponents. In 9 games against the Jets, Edmonton came away with 7 wins, all of which came in regulation.
They will no doubt be looking to continue this dominance into the postseason
Special teams have also been a bright spot for the Oilers as they lead the league in power play goals and power play percentage, scoring on an incredible 27.59% of the time. They are also 8th in the league when it comes to penalty kill percentage, where they sit at 82.47%.
In net, Edmonton has enjoyed a mini resurgence of 39 year old net minder Mike Smith. Smith has had a bounce back season posting a .923 save percentage, and a goals against average of 2.31. Smith has solid career numbers in the playoffs as well, so despite his age, I don’t see any reason to doubt him going into this series.
Winnipeg Jets
In contrast to the Oilers, who have had a strong end to the regular season, the jets have crash landed their way into the playoffs with a record of 3-7 in their last 10. They have been without star winger Nikolaj Ehlers for this skid, and there has been no confirmation that he will be back for game one.
Winnipeg is a deep team offensively, with 9 forwards having 20 points or more. Kyle Connor is their leading goal scorer with 26 goals, but the key to this series against Edmonton will likely lie in how well the forward depth can shut down McDavid and Draisaitl.
The Jets are also fairly strong on special teams, with a power play percentage of 22.98 which is good enough for 7th in the league, and a penalty kill percentage of 80.54, ranked 13th league wide.
These stats are fairly good, but the Oilers are simply better on both counts, so the Jets will have to control play 5 on 5- Something they have struggled to do as of late.
The best chance for the Jets lies between the pipes. Connor Hellebuyck has not had a great season by his standards. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has a 2.58 goals against average, and a .916 save percentage.
With that said, Hellebuyck is perfectly capable of being dialled in and stealing the Jets a few games.

Free Edmonton Oilers vs Winnipeg Jets NHL Prediction:
Anything is possible in playoff hockey, but given the recent play of both teams, I have to imagine that the Edmonton Oilers will prevail in game one. Even though Edmonton’s forward group is about as deep as an above ground pool, Connor McDavid has reached a new level this season, and his explosive offensive talent will likely be too much for the Jets to contain.
I’m taking the Oilers on the Moneyline for game one!
