So the Oilers dominated the game last night right from the opening puck drop, their offence was absolutely feeling it and their second line of Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins and Yamamoto all had two goals a piece.
However, some on brand defensive breakdowns and gaffes cost them Skinner’s shutout bid which was something I was really hoping the Oilers would preserve as they don’t have one yet this season. I will break down those defensive plays a little more later.
The Jets pulled Hellebuyck in the 3rd period sending out Rittich to start the frame, in a move that you have to think is to give him a bit of a rest to go tonight as they desperately need a win.
You also have to think that heading into this one, the Jets are going to be hungry for a little redemption after what was a really poor performance all around for them. They were incredibly undisciplined taking 9 minor infractions and just looked uninspired out there.
So let’s take a look at the ladder half of this home and home series between these two shall we.
Winnipeg Jets
As I said if you didn’t watch the game last night this Jets squad just looked like they were from a different league. Frequently out of position, losing battles, poor efforts on offence (on a 3 on 1 Pionk took a slap shot to the inside of the net rather than a rebound bid).
It must have been tough to watch as a Jets fan or backer.
Hockey players are typically very cognizant about what happened last game and I predict that the Jets will bring their A game tonight.
Offense
There’s no doubt that this team has some talent up front. Mark Scheifele looked good at times last night, the guy is just so crafty with the puck.

Kyle Connor is also a stud who has wheels coupled with elite shooting ability. But both guys just looked like they were playing in a throwaway game.
I think of the tripping call Connor took early in the first period where he didn’t even make an effort and his body language looked awful.
Again I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say they will look much better at home today.
Defense
Defensively they didn’t look good either, and their Norris candidate Josh Morrissey was honestly one of their worst players last night. He looked frustrated and got consistently outplayed and outworked each shift.
Goaltending
I was a massive Hellebuyck hype boy yesterday and I still am, but I am far less scared of this team as I was now after watching what Edmonton did to him last night. Now, the same logic applies here, I am positive he will also bring his A game in this one to get redemption for the embarrassment.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are playing their best hockey of the season this week including their loss to Boston. They seem to have tapped into their most complete, 60 minute, elite game, the one we all remember from the playoffs last year.
Offense
The offence really speaks for itself, I am sure you’ve all gotten tired of me repeating the same old talking points with this team.
Draisaitl, Yamamoto and Nugent-Hopkins had a particularly amazing evening as a line, a line I have loved for a long time and I am not sure why Woodcroft has moved away from it in recent history.
I would imagine they will be kept together for awhile now though.
Defense
Here’s where things are still very inefficient for the Oilers even with the Ekholm pickup. While he has looked great in his two games in an Oilers sweater so far, his compatriots on the backend are still not good enough.
On the short handed goal allowed, Desharnais coughed up a puck right in front of the net trying to move it to the forward who had a better angle to dump it out as he was on his back hand which may have been the right idea, except he had time to pivot to his forehand and get the clear.
And on the Dillon goal, the winger lost him as he activated from the point and the weak side defenseman was puck watching to the strong side and could not get in the shooting lane in time.
These are the kinds of breakdowns that make me irate watching the Oilers both as a fan, and as a bettor. What drives me even more nuts is the arrogant analytic nerds on twitter whose models don’t account for these kinds of things and they harp on things like our xGA being pretty good so the defence corps isn’t that bad.
Shut up.
Goaltending
Skinner looked great, it should be his net from here on out. Full stop.
Not one of the three goals allowed was his fault. He has great technique, was positionally sound all night and looks like a calm, effortless goalie in there but also works very hard.

Free Edmonton Oilers vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Prediction
As I have sat down to write this the total has gone from 6.5 to 7.0 and it’s juiced to the under at -125, the over being +105. As you all know I have been tracking these juiced totals in the NHL this season and the books have been really sharp this year for whatever reason.
I still lean towards the over in this one however, I think I will be breaking my own rules. The way the Oilers are clicking here is just too risky to take an under even despite all I said about the Jets likely to bring their A game at home, where they have been very good this season.
But, Campbell is going to start for the Oilers who has not been playing well at all, and Rittich was scheduled to start as well. Given the pull last night however and the fact the Jets desperately need wins, I think Hellebuyck may get the call again so let’s monitor that today.
At any rate, gimme goals goals goals. Let’s get it.
