The Oilers are hitting the road after an embarrassing effort against the Stars on Saturday in a matinee where after we saw Jack Campbell almost in tears in his post game presser discussing his early season struggles which I will dive into deeply today and how angry I am about what the public and media is saying.
On the other hand we have the Capitals who are really struggling this season thus far. Some people are saying Ovechkin lost his fastball, they are seriously banged up yet again they have recently lost TJ Oshie adding to the list of their core battling ailments.
And their goaltending is once again a massive issue but most importantly they are just so banged up.
So let’s dig into this one.
Edmonton Oilers
I got raked over the coals by people online for saying this and now everything I thought appears to be coming to light (appears to be, more on this in a second.) but I also don’t want to sound like I am dancing on this guys grave because for the most part, ESPECIALLY the recent loss to Dallas are not Campbell’s fault.
This Oilers defensive unit is pathetic. They are 27th in the NHL in shots on goal allowed per game with 34.8 and they 24th in the league in goals allowed per game with 3.5.
There’s no doubt that Campbell has let some softies in this season but for him to jump on the sword the way he did, and for the narrative to be all about him is preposterous and anyone saying it’s fault shows how little they know hockey or just aren’t watching these Oilers games.
I can think of at least 8 goals this season off the top of my head that came off of forwards sitting in front of our net for absolute tap ins and our defenceman or centerman are nowhere to be found.
And that’s another key as well it’s not just the defence that plays poorly in our own end it’s also our forwards. They have poor body language that indicates they do not care and are just waiting for the puck to go the other way.
It’s as if they just surrender goals in the hopes that they can outscore their issues which is often the case. But seriously, our best player on the blueline this season so far is Tyson Barrie who many saw as expendable this off-season.
Their philosophy and structure MUST be corrected in their own zone if they want to be a contender because it’s pathetic to watch right now. They miss assignments that you learn about in peewee, that my cousins midget team doesn’t meet.
The Caps are having their own struggles both in net and in dealing with an early season injury bug to some of their most important players. John Carlson is questionable for tonight, Connor Brown is out, Carl Hagelin, Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie and of course Nick Backstrom who may not return at all.
Lindgren is due to get the start tonight who has a 3.03 GAA and .919 sv % but is 1-1-1 in his 3 starts. The Caps are also losers of 4 straight so both teams are looking out of a slump tonight.
The Capitals still have Ovy and Kuznetsov so they should be able to penetrate the worst defensive structure in the NHL.

Stuart Skinner is in net for this one who is on fire to start this season. He also gets better performances in front of him than Campbell, another reason why I am so sick of hearing about Jack being bad but I am done harping on that.
I like the score to stay under today so gimme that.
