This classic Western Canada match up should be an exciting start to the season for both the Oilers and the Canucks. This season, Edmonton will be looking to supplement the scoring of their captain, Connor McDavid with some depth acquired in the off season, and Vancouver will aim to improve on what was an extremely tough season last year.
The Edmonton Oilers are fresh off of a disappointing end to last season, and they will be looking to start the season off on the right foot. It’s impossible to talk about the Oilers and not mention Connor McDavid, but at this point we know what to expect in terms of points from the Oilers Captain.
He’s perfectly capable of winning a regular season game all by himself, but hopefully he won’t have to nearly as often this year.
In the off season, the Oilers went out and acquired several pieces which should help round out their line up. Perhaps the most important, is the signing of Zach Hyman, who is a reliable winger at both ends of the ice.
The big question for the Oilers this year is on their blue line.
Duncan Keith is a veteran presence, but the Oilers will likely miss Adam Larsson and Ethan Bear on the back end.
The Vancouver Canucks had a difficult season last year, there’s no doubt about it. Scoring troubles plagued them on the ice, and an outbreak of Covid-19 in the locker room further dampened their chances.
In the off-season, they managed to move three bad contracts to Arizona while acquiring Oliver Ekman-Larrson, who has also underperformed his contract in recent years. If OEL is able to turn things around the trade might prove valuable to the team.
The Canucks have also freshly signed their two young stars, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes to big contracts.
These two should continue to play extremely well, but negotiations cut into training camp, so it remains to be seen if they will be able to start the season how they want to.
The preseason is not necessarily a reliable indicator of how a team will do, but the Canucks have had their struggles so far. We’ll see how they do in the first real game of the season

Free Edmonton Oilers Vs. Vancouver Canucks NHL Prediction
I don’t see the Canucks being able to contain Edmonton’s talented group of top six forwards, so I think this game likely swings heavily in favour of the Oilers.
We’ll see if Thatcher Demko is up to the challenge of McDavid and Draisatl.
