So I am fed up with both my fandom of, and financially backing the Oilers defence to win hockey games and apparently so is Leon Draisaitl. After last nights game against the Caps he publicly called out the fact that they give up too many goals.
He claimed that it was tiring and exhausting to constantly be behind in games. It wasn’t a quote directly calling out the defence but I think we can read between the lines on this one.
I am sorry to beat a dead dog yet again but this squad is unbearable to watch in their own zone. On the first goal last night the second that Foegle picked up the puck, every other Oiler raced for the offensive zone and Bouchard went for a change as the last man back.
Not obfuscate Foegle of any blame because he should have plastered it high and hard off the glass and then screamed at his mates on the bench for playing hockey like children, but what an absolute embarrassment this squad is right now.
I defended our goalies in the last post and tore into the defensive unit, but now I am really wondering about coaching because how this issue is not being addressed is really puzzling from a team at the highest level.
On the other side in this one we have the Tampa Bay Lightning who after coming out of the gate slow have been on fire as of late, sitting at 7-4-1 and playing their best hockey.
So let’s take a look at why this Oilers squad has hit an icy patch.
Edmonton Oilers
Jesse Puljujärvi while beloved by analytics hardos seems to accomplish absolutely nothing out there. The line he was on to start the year with Foegle and McLeod did drive the play a lot and spent time in the offensive zone which is what you want from your third line I suppose, but this guy is just absolutely ineffectual out there right now.
He’s a big man who is terrified of parking himself in front of the goalie to look for rebounds. He shot the puck a lot last night but he’s not particularly good at it.
He vacates areas that he should be populating during the cycle game to support the puck which results in a lot of pressures ending. He looks like he’s working hard out there but the guy just has his head up his ass most of the time and I am sick of watching him.
Holloway has been far better than both him and Yamamoto thus far and needs to get a crack on the line with Kane and Drai or McDavid and Nuge.
As for the defence? I dunno man, call up some AHLers or something, can’t be worse than what we have.
