Suddenly the San Jose Sharks are one of the hottest teams in hockey in what’s proving to be a very erratic 2019/2020 season.
But this has been such an erratic season for so many teams, like the Sharks for example, they still find themselves stuck near the bottom of the Pacific Division, after a start to the season that had them looking like they would be out of playoff contention.
The Sharks vie for their seventh consecutive victory as they take on the division-leading Edmonton Oilers after beating them on the road last week, they will host the Oilers.
Speaking of erratic, the Oilers who’s expectations on the season were low, sit a top the Pacific Division, but now are slumping, just as they open a five-game road trip.
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers will head into this game holding a record of 13 victories and 6 losses, as noted. that puts them at first in the Pacific Division. However, they’ll now have to prove they’re more than a flash in the pan after their meteoric rise to the top of the division.
The Oilers strong suit is offense. So far this season, they have earned a total of 70 goals. That good for third in the West and 8th in the league, and not at all bad considering the amount of powerhouse offenses we’re seeing this season.
Their problem is defense. The Oilers suffered a 5-4 overtime defeat against visiting Dallas on Saturday, after blowing a two-goal lead in the third period. So sure, they netted four goals but the defense has to carry them to the end.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks’ winning streak followed a 1-6-1 stretch. So while it’s helped them move past Los Angeles and out of the division cellar that extremely poor start to the season has them in a hole.
Just the same, the Sharks are starting to find ways to win, and perhaps more importantly finding that grit that propelled them to the later rounds of the playoffs last season.
Forwards like Kevin Labanc are scoring again, and they are playing their tough forechecking style, however, their defense remains a soft spot.

On the face of it, this should be the Sharks game to lose. They have all the momentum going in, and are a strong home team.
That said Edmonton has some good strong young talent, who will want payback for last week’s humiliating loss at home.
